Question about 1998 Mercury Mystique

2 Answers

Hello, I have a 98 Mercury Mystique GS, 4 Cyl, 2.0L. The timing belt broke, it was replaced taken back home. The engine light is now on and reads P1381 which is for the variable cam timing. So as you step on the gas, around 3000rpm it jumps/stutters. We bring it back, they have a look and suggest do an oil change, because the sensor is based off oil pressure. It works at the shop. But the next day the jumping/stuttering is back and the check engine light is on again. Decide drive it for 300kms and then the timing belt broke again. Do you know what may be causing the timing belt to break again? I was told the engine is a non interference engine, so that shouldn't be an issue. Do you think it is an improper alignment of timing belt?

If it was because of low oil pressure, why wouldn't the low oil pressure light come on? The oil has been changed regularly at 5000kms, only this time it got to 7500kms. But never low on the dipstick

    The edges are all smooth

I just want to hear all the options of what it may be. What would cause lack of oil pressure to the camshaft bearings?

YOU LIKELY HAVE A CAMSHAFT THAT IS SEIZED IN THE BEARINGS FROM LACK OF OIL PRESSURE, U WILL NEED THE ENGINE TORN DOWN TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE, THIS IS WHY THE BLET BROKE AGAIN.

I have 35 years experience as a factory trained Ford technician with a master mechanic certification from ford, believe me you got the expert advice u seek, sorry it was not what you wanted to hear, but if u want the car to run again u will follow my advice and have the camshafts checked for running dray on lubrication.

I did not say low oil pressure, i said lack of pressure to the camshafts bearings, very different, the engine warning oil pressure light would not come on in this case, but guess u are the expert here. Good luck

The teeth should be smooth on all gears. If sharp at the edges they are worn and will cut a belt off very soon

The Timing belt broke on my 1995 mercury mystique I was looking for a manuel to fix it. thank you

This can be a big problem if it is a Non Interferrance Motor, meaning that when your timing belt broke you engine basically free wheeled during slow down. This can bend the intake and exhaust valves, extended cranking on motor trying to get it to start after the belt breaks can also cause this. You can get a Chiltons manual to have a guide in replacing the timing belt, i can say i know the motor in your car is a dual over head cam engine. These can be a little more difficult to do if you have never replaced a timing belt. May be best to take it to a professional that can test the head and make sure that no valves are bent before you pay for the belt and timing tensioner.

You should be illuminating the check engine light. If so, rent a scanner, read the codes and pursue to repairs. You should replace the fuel filter and check the air cleaner. The fuel pump may be on it's last legs--check fuel pressure at the fuel rail over the injectors (a tire-valve looking test port). The pressure should be ~45 to 55 PSI with the engine running.
