Take it to Autozone/advance auto they will scan codes for free. But odds are its the coolant temp sensor mine just went and thats exactly what happened.

Self test is with the ignition key switch. you need to cycle the key off-on, off-on, off-on. The check engine light will flash out codes in pairs of numbers. The end of the test will be 5-5. report back with codes. But I'm betting its the crank position sensor.

you may want to take the time to clean the throttle bore and plates. also clean out the idle air control valve and PCV valve. One can of spray carb cleaner should do.

Well, my transmission likes to slip majorly between 1st and 2nd gear. and if im just starting the car (like first thing in the morning), ill give it about a minute to warm up and then ill leave. well when...

After the engine reaches operating temp, on a flat level surface, check the fluid level in the transmission (running in park) If it's low, top it off. If it's full, chances are there is an internal seal that is allowing pressure loss, preventing the transmission clutches to fully engage. You could try changing the fluid and filter, adding lucas trans conditioner. That may help a bit but most times the only permanent cure is to rebuild/replace the unit. Don't expect "instant results" from the conditioner. often it takes a few days to took a long time for the seal to wear.

This problem is frecuently in this models, check the levels and reset your ECU.

'93 Grand Cherokee intermittently starts and runs

Hi, I had simmilar problem with my 1993 JGC . I ran out of gas and it would not start until the next day. Then it will start and run until I put the brakes on tho stop and then it will die. It starts right back up. Ended up being the voltage regulator in the ECC/ECM. It is at the mechanics shop right now waiting for the ECC to come in.I will post a follow up.
have Fun,

It sure sounds like a starter solenoid issue, they act just like that, had exactly the same concern on my car, no crank just clicks under hood, new starter solenoid contacts cured the problem. I don't know if your solenoid is rebuild-able or not, I think it is a Japanese starter so most likely it is.
