A defective knock sensor may cause engine detonation or reduced spark advance and fuel economy. When a knock sensor is removed and replaced, the sensor must be tightened to its specified torque. If the knock sensor is installed tighter than it should be, it may become too sensitive and provide an excessively high voltage signal, resulting in more spark ****** than required. When the knock sensor is installed looser than it should be, the knock sensor signal will be lower than normal, resulting in engine detonation.

    To replace the knock sensor:

?Disconnect the knock sensor wiring connector.
    ?Then, unscrew the sensor.
    ?Remove the knock sensor.
?Reverse the procedures to install the part.

DO NOT LISTEN TO THOSE IDIOTS AT AUTOZONE, THEY ARE NOT TRAINED ELECTRONIC ENGINE CONTROL TECHS, THAT TAKES YEARS, I WISH READING A CODE TOLD U EXACTLY WHAT TO DO, BUT THAT IS NOT THE CASE, THAT IS WHY I EARN $50 AN HOUR AND THEY GET MIN. WAGE. IN SOME STATES THEY ARE NOT ALLOWED TO HAND OUT ANY ADVICE DUE TO COURT INJUNCTIONS AND PENDING LAW SUITS, WHY? PEOPLE FOLLOWED THERE ADVICE SPENT LOTS OF MONEY ON PARTS THAT DIDN'T FIX THE PROBLEMS.

What code did they tell you was in the computers memory?

  • kgirman Sep 27, 2010

No code. just handed me a receipt with notes of
    1. Knock Sensor defective
    2. Check connector and wiring to sensor
    3. Engine mechanical condition-knock or rattle in engine
    4. Low fuel pressure

I know not to trust autozone with my car but I am unemployed and trying to save money. Service engine soon light came on and off for a few days and still is on. Just need to know if I should replace the sensor right away or if I have some time. I will fix it if need to... but curious about the severity. If I can do it by myself then I will but otherwise I will spend the $300-$500 to get it done by a shop. Just don't have that money right now.

If they did not give you a trouble code than find someplace that will. It is really uncommon to have knock sensors go bad. It is more common for a mechanical failure to cause the knock sensor to become more active than it should causing the knock sensor code.

Does the engine make any noise when it is running?

The best thing you could do is find out specifically what the code is that is causing the check engine light to come on. Then research that code for a solution.

BTW, we get a lot of cars in our shop that have been to autoszone and have had no resolution to there problem. I agree with emission wiz, it takes years of experience under the hood to be good at figuring this stuff out. You can't hand a guy a scan tool and expect him to solve problems. That guy with the scan tool at autozone more than likely, barely has more automotive experience than you do kgirman! :)

I have a 99 oldsmobile bravada 4.3 jasper engine new with 61k and the service engine soon light came on and read a po327 knock sensor code Please tell me how to fix it and where its located on the engine

Hi, this code could indicate a wiring issue or a problem with the sensor itself. A new sensor is about $40. The sensor is on the back of the engine as shown in the picture below. If you have an ohmmeter, I recommend you check the continuity of the wire from the sensor to the computer. The computer is in the passenger side door pillar. Locate connector B, pin 19. You do not need to disconnect the computer to check continuity of the wire. Just probe the back of the connector at the dark blue wire, pull the connector off the sensor, and touch your other ohmmeter probe to the terminal in the knock sensor connector. There should be one ohm or less resistance in the wire. If resistance is higher than one ohm, repair or replace the wire. If resistance is good, unscrew and replace the sensor. Please let me know if you have questions, and thanks for using FixYa.

Where is the knock sensor located on a 2005 gmc sierra 1500 4x4 5.3 L

Do not replace with Autozone knock sensors unless you feel like doing the job twice as I found out the hard way. I replaced mine and a week later the check engine light came back on. Went to the dealer and was told they have seen this problem many times before and to use oem replacement parts only. The two sensors and harness ran me about $230 from the dealer but no more engine light and no more sputtering. Hopefully I can return them to Autozone as soon as I find the receipts.

My service engine soon light came on in my 2002 ford explorer what can it be?

The service engine soon/check engine (yellow light) comes only when the computer control unit (called the PCM) senses a fault in the electronic controls of the engine and/or the emission system you will seldom feel the car engine run any different, there are about 200 possible faults that turn the light on, to know what has developed a problem you must have the system tested, this is called an OBD2 fault code test, Kragen and Autozone parts stores do this testing for free.

Service engine soon light came on went to auto parts store the readout on the diagnostic tool indicated it was the knock sensor. They sold me one I have a chiltons manual it states there are two located...

yes, unfortunately the intake manifold will need to be removed to get to the knock sensor. make sure you have all gaskets and tools handy before you start this procedure.

It could be that your knock sensor circuit is working perfectly. You may have a knock that it is reading for long periods.
Try running it disconnected, and see if there is a clatter or knock when accelerating lightly.

You could have a vacuum leak.

Checked at autozone when service engine soon light came on code for knock sensor and fuel running rich came up...are these expensive to repair?

The knock sensor is located under the intake manifold and will be expensive to fix at 5-6 hours labor. The rich code could be a bunch of different things and will need to be hooked up to an actual computer to see what is out of spec.

2000 Nissan Xterra Service Engine soon indicator is always on

The knock sensor is not a huge deal to replace and will not turn on the light. It should be dont though.

The crankshaft sensor is located directly between the engine and transmission. It is dead center at the bottom.

SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT/ POOR GAS MILAGE

knock sensor is located on the block usually under the intake. nissan has problems with these sensors. i have chaunged plenty of these on nissans in the past year. this has no affect on your gas mileage. this sensor picks up misfires on the engine. sometimes you might have rough idle and can't feel it in the drivers seat but the knock sensor can. i would suggest maybe a tune up spark plugs, air filter, fuel filter first before going to take apart a bunch of things to change a sensor. the sensor is designed to pick up any differences in motor quality and will throw the engine light on. sometimes the problem is the knock sensor, or there is an underlying cause that the knock sensor is reading.

Nissan xterra knock sensor

It's the valley of the engine underneath the intake manifold. It's about an $800 job because the top of the engine has to come off. However, unless you have a supercharged xterra it shouldn't effect performance. Also, the knock sensor will not trip the check engine light, as it does not indicate a primary problem, so if your light is on you should have another code that should be fixed first.
