Question about 1996 Cadillac DeVille

2 Answers

Hi. I just bought a 96' Cadilliac Deville in mid Feb. and it gets to extreme temperatures. I have replaced the spark plugs (and wires), thermostat, and just purchased a brand new radiator. I have yet to install the radiator. I plan on doing it this week. I just want to know if changing the radiator will fix the overheating. And if not, will it be the water pump? .... The vehicle will inform me about every 2-3 days to "Check Coolant Level". I have to use my Cadillac ONLY as an A to B car.

Ok, thank you. I do notice that once the car gets hot, first steam and then the water DOES come out. Next step, replaceing the radiator! Thanks Again.

I also get a check coolant light only it is about every other month. All I have to do is pour about an 8 oz. cup of water into the overflow and it goes away and I have had a pinhole leak for at least 6 years. The radiator may or may not fix the problem as there are many lines going around which could also leak.Is there constantly a puddle underneath after you park and let sit a couple hours? If you can, make sure all the lines are dry,let it run and just keep watching for a leak while it is running. After it warms up enough to get the system going, maybe turn it off and check the radiator and all the lines with a rag or something every 5 minutes to find liquid because every 2 or 3 days for check coolant is quite a leak if it is the radiator or a line and not the water pump.Even if you do find a leak, after you fix it you will need to monitor the temperature guage and do the same check which should let you know about the water pump being good.Obviously you do not want to assume it is fixed with an overheat problem because if the engine gets up into the red,well...you know the possibilities with the engine it seems.
Good luck !Greg If you have any questions just comment here and I will get an autolink to your post.

Hi, before replacing the radiator, check for coolant flow at the Purge line, this is a common problem on the Northstar.
There is a small diameter hose coming from near the top of the coolant tank, this is the purge line.
With the engine idling, pull the purge line from the tank, if there is no coolant flow from this small hose, it is blocked and this will cause overheating. If the hose is clear, check for blockage at the nipple on the tank. And if finally there us no blockage at the nipple end of the tank, you can then proceed to replace the radiator.

By the way, head gasket failure on the Northstar is very often misdiagnosed and is usually the result of a simple blockage as I've described.
Also, air locks in the northstar are unlikely because it is self purging, this is what the purge line is for.

I have a cylinder 6 misfire on my 00 cadillac deville. do u think the plugs need to ne replaced?

Usually, if you only have 1 cylinder misfiring, you have either a bad spark plug or bad spark plug wire. If you replace the cylinder 6 spark plug and still have a misfire condition, replace your spark plug wires. If replacing the plug and wires doesn't fix the problem, replace the ignition coil.

1994 Cadilliac Sedan DeVille

sounds like a bad mass air flow sensor. this sensor is located on the duct that connects to where the air filter goes, it should have one or two wires coming from it. Unfortunitly they are rather expensive so you will want to have someone with a computer hook up to your car and tell you what the exact problem is before you just go and poke around replacing expensive parts that do not need to be replaced.
