Question about 2003 Ford Escape

1 Answer

Two Days ago , at night when headlights, dash lights are on , my battery light flickers very softly. I had the battery and alternator tested by two different mechanic shops, both stated charging system is fine. I replaced the alternator approx 6 weeks ago. Any suggestions on what the problem could be?

This can be poor grounding of the engine and alternator and battery as there is a potential drop. It can also be due to a mismatch with high load when the charging voltage is not balanced.
So since the alternator was replaced the rectifier/regulator also can have a small leak which is producing the soft light which goes off when the headlight is swithced off. A test may not show this because the charge would be seen but the fault is a tiny ac leak into the system due to the weak regulator. It might fail in the long run or casue static in radio.

Possible that the rectifier/regulator unit is faulty but if the problems worsens change the unit. Other wise the leak can be negligible.....but before a long journey...

Thank you for the information. Is my car still safe to drive, and if it is the rectifier/regulator unit. what does something like that run to replace?

You can run the car but it is only a possible weakness... check the cost with the dealer.

The battery light is flickering on and off on the dash. I put a new battery in and had my alternator checked out(its prefect) When driving at night my headlights dim and brighten. What could this be?

The regulator in the alternator is most likely the problem.
The alternator could be charging.......just not correctly....... the flickering headlights are showing a varying voltage.......and with the charging light flickering too..........99% chance you need a complete rebuilt alternator.

Alternator and electrical problems ive changed alternator twice, now clicking noise under dash bat. light comes on and dash lights flicker

check all battey connections and system grounds. Check that the battery has 12v and holds properly when load tested. To check charging system, don't disconnect any battery leads...put a volt meter across the battery. when running, you should have at least 12.9v and volts should not drop. (usual reading is generally at or near 13) at idle with all accessories on voltage should be close to that as well. voltage should not exceed 14.Also make sure that drive belt is not slipping.

Flickering Lights

You do need an alternator. Nissan has a campaign on Maxima alternator in certain years such as 96-98 I believe. Go to your friendly Nissan dealer abd have them punch your VIN number into the NNA net. they will know and that will tell them if your vehicle applies by the VIN. I have seen the alternator on fire. There was fire inside of the alternator. Have it checked or the car can catch on fire.
