Cooling fans do not work.Replaced relay. Turn ac on and one fan worked until i connected the other fan to it to see if the motor of that fan was bad or not,now neither of the fans will run. I replaced the relay again and none of the fans will run. Before aything was done i could turn the ac on and one fan would run.

1996 corvette fans will not run even @ high temp of 235.Havwe replaced relay at one time .When turning ac on it worked. Then trouble shooting the other fan by connecting both fans neither will run now and i even replace the relay again.

  • otking2 Sep 27, 2010

I checked both fans direct from another power source and they both work. If i understand you correctly, there is a switch behind the right head near the starter? And if the pressure from the compressor activates the other fan and i have already replaced that relay, maybe i shoul get another relay? The ac when i turn it on the compressor kicks on and of continuously,on and off .

  • otking2 Sep 27, 2010

I bypassed the relay and both fans will run.I connected everything back up and still the fan does not come on when ac is turned on. The compressor clutch engages on and off when i turn on the ac.The temp getsa to 225 and cooling fan still will not come on. That switch behind the head above the starter is possibly the problem?

Hello! There are three cooling fan relays...And three fuses...Lets begin with the fuses...Fuse #2 (30A)= primary cooling fan...Fuse # 5 (40A)=secondary cooling fan...Both of these are under-hood. Fuse #29 (5A)=fan fuse...Feeds power to all three relays and is located inside...If all three fuses are good; Lets check the relays..All 3 relays receive power on a Pink wire multiple from fuse#29...Ground is fired to pull relay #2 and #3 on a Dark Blue wire from the PCM C1 pin# 10...Relay #1 receives ground from PCM C1 pin#10 on the Dark Green wire...

Do all three relays have power? Do all three relays receive pulling ground from the PCM? Send a comment..Guru..Saailer

Hello! As an addition; Here is a chart for the Engine Control Temperature (ECT) sensor...Using an ohm meter the sensor can be tested...The sensor tells the PCM when to turn cooling fans off/on...

The motor of fans must be bad.So by pass the relay connection.I agree that you have replaced the relay. But still by pass the relay and see if motor turns on the fan.Hot wire the relay then see if fan runs.If it runs that means the new relay which you replaced is either not compatible with your car fan or its compatible but its getting short due to loose connection of fan wire somewhere get it checked. But if the fan does not works by bypassing the relay that means either the fan motor is faulty or the fan controlling switch. Check with meter the fan motor will show 12 volts.---------- the engine cooling fan is not controlled by the ECM... it is controlled by a fan switch in the right cylinder head above the starter ... between the spark plugs...replace the fan switch... replace the connector pig tail.Don't wrap too much teflon tape around the new fan switch.. the body of the switch has to ground to the cylinder head...the pig tail is in the harness with the starter wires. ------------- You have to use a 192F thermostat to get to the proper temp... or the stat will open long before the cooling fan comes on..
there is another switch on the back of the AC compressor hose.. that is the same wire... when the AC pressure builds up on the high side... it turns on the engine cooling fan.
---------------- When the engine is running hot and the radiator fan should be on, check for 12 volts to the fan. If there is no voltage, there is a relay or sensor that has failed. If there is voltage, then the fan motor needs replacing. --------------

Thanks. Keep updated for any more query. You can rate this solution and show your appreciation

Keep in mind that if the fan doesn't run with the engine running and the A/C its ON position, bad fan or sensor or relay. Then, its possible that you have any problem with the Air Conditioning Thermostatic Expansion Valve Replacement, not wth the fans relay or motor.

The service procedure for replacing the expansion valve on the Corvette is outlined below. This procedure is more detailed and supercedes the one listed on page of the Chassis Service Manual.

1. Purge system of refrigerent.
2. Drain cooling system and remove radiator supply tank.
3. Disconnect heater hoses from heater core.
4. Disconnect power element bulb.
5. Remove expansion valve hold down strap.
6. Remove equalizer line from suction throttling valve.
7. Disconnect expansion valve inlet and outlet connections and remove valve.
8. Install new thermostatic expansion valve by reversing removal procedure.
9. Evacuate and charge system.

Test it and tell us news.

Why do my fans not come on when cooling

The easiest way to tell if the fans work is to put your AC on max, even if it does not work, both your fans should turn on as long as the vehicle is running. if they do not turn on, check the fuses first, then the fan relays, you can usually swap the horn relay to see if they come on, if you still do not see the fans working, they may need to be replaced, the thermal switch is bypassed while the AC is on max so if the fans come on then, but not when engine gets hot, it may require replacement,
note: if both fans work during ac max operation all the fuses and relays in there circuit are working and need no attention

Engine cooling fan only works when ac or defrost is on

if engine at long stand still, the engine temperature will rise about 190 degrees the cooling fan suppose to automaticaly turn on when coolant temperature sensor get hot it cause its resistance decrease causing pcm to send power to coolant fan relays and cooling fans, when you turn on AC the cooling fans suppose to turn on to cool down AC CONDENSOR, IF NOT AC WONT WORK COOLING FAN COOLS DOWN REFRIGERANT SO IT CAN RECYCLE THROUGH THE SYSTEM AGAIN.your cooling is suppose to turn on when engine at a sit still if vechicle not moving as coolant temperature rises at a set point the cooling fans will turn on cool down engine.cooling fans dont turn on when you first cold stsrt vechicle unless you have AC SWITCH ON.if cooling fans dont turn on when vechicle at a long stand still or moving along slow traffic.if coolant temperature sensor been replaced and fuses and relays okay have dealership check see if pcm driver circuit working faulty pcm will cause cooling fans not to turn on.

you know the water pump for that particular car is on the other side? is driven by the cam... either your water pump is not working,(to remove water pump you need special tool) did you change the termostat? temp. sensor?

In my saturn the fan does not turn and the car runs hot

You can have a couple things going on. One being a bad temperature sensor. Dont be to surprised many cars have 2 and for one of them its only function is to tell the fan when to turn on. The other is a bad fan motor. Jumper a wire from the battery to the connector and see if it turns on. If it doesn't then you need a new motor.

Overheats if left idling but not if driving...cooling fans aren't coming on...what couls be wrong?

the cooling fans on your car are comanded on by the engine control module which reads engine temperature from the temperature sensor . when comanded on the engine control module sends a signal to the cooling fan relays . which in turn runs the current to the cooling fans . So you might want to check the cooling fan relays and make sure the fues for the cooling fans are good and the relays .if the cooling fan fuses and relays are good it could be a problem with the fan motors or the engine control module not reading the right temperature in that case it could mean you have a problem with the temperature sensor

When I turn on my a/c the car starts to everheat

When ever the car overheats,it is always the best thing on your car,to check the cooling fans. When the ac is on,look to see if the cooling fans are running, and running fast, and smoothly. In your case,I am going to go out on a limb, and say they are not.First check for blown cooling fan fuse. Then,if the fuses are alright, check the cooling fan relays, most likely more than one.One prong,or spade coming out of the relay,is ground(where it plugs up).To make the relay energize, ground this terminal with a test light .Just like you are using the test light to check for 12 volts. When you touch the ground spade on the relay it will energize the relay to turn the fans on.Just pull the relay out of it`s spot, just enough to touch the spade.Do this with the ac on,and engine running. The clutch relay on most cars will energize the relay, but the ac compressor is working on your car,so it is either the fan relay,or the high side switch on the ac system that is bad.Try and see if the cooling fans, both of them,or one of them, will come on by them selves as the car warms up,with the ac off.The fan or fans should come on,and go off by themselves.Don`t let the engine overheat, keep a good eye out not to let that happen. If the fans never come on,then, the fan,or fans could be bad.You can test them by running wire from battery to the fan,and grounding to frame. Now the fuse,or relay being bad will also cause this.If a fuse is blown, then ,one or more of the fans are bad,and will have to be replaced. The fans cool the radiator for the engine and transmission cooling, and the condenser for the ac system. If the condenser is not cooled down, the ac freon will be to warm to cool the vehicle. If I can help, let me know.>>roniecon@gmail.com

Replaced relay, but both electric fans won't come on

Are we talking about the cooling fans for the engine and AC condenser?? Only one cooling fan will cycle on and off during normal operation. The main cooling fan will cycle on and off as needed for cooling the engine. If you turn on the AC or select a defrost mode on your climate control then the 2nd additional fan will run usually continuously in order to condense the freon in your AC system for cooling the interior of your car and in defrost mode it helps to reduce interior moisture on the glass (defog/ defrost). If no fan comes on at any time whether the engine is hot or cold or whether you turn on the AC or not and you have already replaced a cooling fan relay and checked related fuses then either the fan /s are bad or you dont have power in or out of the fan circuit which consists of several components that would need to be checked. Let us know if you find anything else or have additional questions.
