Question about 1995 Chevrolet Lumina

1 Answer

I drive a 95 Lumina. I have brought a brand new battery, alternator and starter, but it doesn't turn over. It doesn't even start with a jump. When ever the anti-lock light comes on my car doesn't start. what could be the problem?

When the light comes on it says anti-lock it doesn't say anti-theft. I'm going to try all of what you said, but i'm not understanding what you mean when you say giggle the shifter in park. I do have a resistor on my key. thanks again for timely response. greatly appreciated.

According to your wiring diagram, the ABS is not related to the starting circuitry. The only switches involved are the ignition, safety interlock, and anti-theft (if equipped). Recommend you try starting in neutral or giggle the shifter in park. Also, it is possible you are mistaking the security light for the ABS light?
Do you have a resistor on your key (black thing on the blade with a wire going across)? If so, check fuse 11.

The PARK/NEUTRAL switch in the above diagram can lose it's adjustment and make it difficult to start the car. When this happens, you can sometimes get it to work by putting the shifter into neutral or somewhere in between park and neutral. Just have your parking brake on in case you end up starting the car in reverse.
I don't know why the ABS light is on, but your anti-theft system may not be recognizing your key. If you have another factory key, try using that one. Let me know what happens...

I forgot to mention that it sounds like the battery is dead. when I turn the key it does a lot of clicking, but doesn't start.

OH, in that case it is not your anti-theft or interlock, or it would not be clicking. But you said the car will not start with a jump, right? Then maybe it's your solenoid. Are you sure the battery is low? Does it make the same sound when you try to jump it?

  • sabrina_berk Sep 27, 2010

the battery, starter and alternator is not even one month old. I meant to say it does start with a jump, but once i turn it off it doesn't start back up. i'm sorry i feel like i'm confusing you and myself. i'll answer back tomorrow getting off now. thanks again. T2UL.

Good morning, I just wanted to let you that you are absolutely correct about it being a shortage. I took my car to be tested on a machine it came back that it was a shortage in the alternator, so the battery was doing all the work and not the alternator. thanks so kindly for your time and timely responses. be blessed and continue to help others as you have helped me. thanks again.

Dead battery

Dangerous practice to try & jump a dead battery

The battery cables could be loose at either end or corroded internally

Most likely the battery is worn out, if original to car
since it was new, or the starter solenoid is worn

You do not want to jump any vehicle made after the
year 2000 or your asking for possible problems with
todays electronics.

You need a good battery that has been tested & fully
charged, then only jump with a jump pack, not another car

1993 lumina sedan wont start pror to going dead that day lady said it was hard to start. thinking its a bad battery car wont start with a jump has power for radio and dime lights doesnt even click when key...

first of all. check voltage at battery with engine off. it should be at least 12.6 volts or better, less then 12 volts battery is bad. when running if alternator is ok. it should read at least 14.1 to 14.7 with accesories off. if less than 14 volts alternator is bad. make sure battery posts and cable clamps are clean and tight. also check the cable to starter for corrosion. if all is ok, then the starter or solinoid is bad. check fuses first !

My 2007 corolla won't start. When I turn the key in the ignition the starter makes a rapid clicking noise. I?ve tried putting the car in neutral and starting it that way, but had no luck. I?ve also tried...

1st check the main cable to the starter make sure it is clean and tight, disconnect battery first, after that there should be a small wire going to the starter jump that small connector to the main battery cable on the starter (IGNITION OFF) if it cranks you have a wiring or ignition switch problem if not Starter time just make sure you get a very good quality starter some cheap and even lifetime starters are so poorly made that even after you replace them you still have a problem only a bad noise coming from the new starter you just put in.

No, cehcek that the terminals aren't corroided.
Maybe even remove them and clean them up.
Then try jump start.

Turn key and nothing happens, replaced the starter, now it is only clicking from the new starter. I have a new battery instaled that will show 12 volts on my dash when connected to another battery jumping...

if you replaced the starter with a remand unit it could still be a bad starter(personal experience),but if your battery show 12v only when being jumped your battery is having issues, take the battery and have it checked if it was replaced before the starter it could have problems due to the starter drawing to much at once and not recovering, and also have the alternator checked out this will kill a brand new battery very quickly even with nothing on.

Starter has no power in start 95 Lumina would not start after shutting off. All accessories work. I also jumped the solenoid and it turns but the starter doesnt.

You are reading this wrong...solenoids don't turn. They activate the starter...that turns. Check your battery connections and battery/charging system. The starter requires far more power than anything else in the car, so those items working won't tell you much.

2004 A 8L won"t start

starter wont click because there's not enough "juice" to turn it over. this isnt because of the battery as you have just replaced it. it is due to a bad alternator recharging the battery as you drive. if it were only a fuse it would be the solenoid in the starter. but if it had started after you installed the battery then its not the solenoid. solution: buy a refurbished alternator and

loosen the battery cable.... start the car with a boost.... after it is running... unhook the battery.... if it dies... replace the alternator... if it keeps running... replace the battery.... make sure this is done outside and everyone working on the car is wearing safety glasses
