Hi, for just a cv joint you need to get a center punch and tap the indent on the nut out so you can loosen the nut in the center of the wheel.

  • Jack the car up and put it safely on blocks as a jack by its self will be unsafe as you can knock the car around alot. Then remove the wheel.
  • Remove the break calipers (be careful not to damage the flexible break line).
  • Then remove the center nut all the way.
  • Undo and remove the 2 bolts that attach the hub to the suspension.
  • Now the hub should be able to move freely around to the rear side of the car. You should be able to push the cv joint out of the hub with abit of effort (be aware that it may be rusted in, so spray it with degreaser and give it gentle taps with a mallet.
  • Be AWARE that if you hit it too hard you may damage the bearing).

Now if just replacing the cv joint and not the drive shaft, remove the rubber boot and tap the back of the cv joint towards you with a with a mallet (be carefull not to hit your self).
  • Put the new cv joint in and do the above in reverse.
  • Also if you have some graphite grease on hand rub abit on the splines that go into the hub to make for easy removal down the track, as they can rust in place.
  • (Remember to fill the new cv with grease and to top up your gearbox oil)

Use a prybar to separate the halfshaft from the transaxle. Is the inner cv joint still attached, so you can pry against it?

93 ford festiva front end growling and scrapeing noises. sometimes jerks to one side. brakes apear ok. speedometer made these same noises pryer to going out. could it posible be from speedo cable. or out...

Sounds like the CV joint is shot - this is a front-wheel drive car, right. The side that it jumps to has a bad CV bearing that needs to be replaced would be my bet.

Cv joint shaft wont pull away from g/box end on right hand side on 2001 ford festiva

you have to use a pry bar inbetween the gearbox and the cv shaft end.they have a retainer spring in the end to keep it in tight.when installing the new one,it may have to be hit with a 2 lb hammer to seat it in place.cover the end of the shaft that goes to the hub, with a piece of wood so it does not damage the is critical that the seal on the transmission is clean and all the splines.

Ford festiva cv boots

Depending on mileage and how long you have driven with a damaged boot, it may be a good idea to swap in a new axle ( re manufactured). If you are handy enough to get the axle out, you should be able to get the old joint apart by putting the axle in a vise, cutting off the old boot, and removing the joint from the axle. There are various ways that these are fastened, but generally they are held in place by a circular clip or retaining ring. Check a manual for your specific type of retainer. Once removed, the joint should be completely disassembled and cleaned in solvent, and then reassembled. Then, you still have an old joint, which is why it is faster and easier and better to replace the axle. Good luck. Chip
