Question about 2002 Kia Sportage

2 Answers

My 2001 Kia Sportage overheated on an offroad climb (130,000 k) but the temperature gauge didn't register above .normal. End result was a blown radiator and a warped motor. Kia found a 2002 replacement motor (93,000 k) along with a new rad. Result: 4 times now on long steep hill (on Pavement) the coolant has boiled. Kia can't determine the problem. They replaced the thermostat and the rad cap but it still boils. By the way, the temperature gauge never goes above normal. I thought I found the problem when I discovered the a/c fan isn't working but today the a/c was turned off and it still boiled. Also the demobilizer button no longer works (it worked previously to the replacement motor). So far, I've brought the car back to Kia 5 times in less tha 3 months and they are stymied as it doesn't overheat when normal driving (eg. flat roads or in their shop). Does anyone have an answer. Thanks.

I had similar problems with my 2001 sportage 4X4 on slow off road pulls and when running the AC on highway grades during hot weather. I replaced both Cat convertors and it ran soooo much better and stopped the BS. very expensive at KIA dealer, try to find parts online and go to a good muufler shop. the rear CAT can be generic

Where is the crank sensor pls --2001 Kia Sportage also what voltage should I get from TPS when disconnected with key ON. -- many thanks. Tim.

TPS voltage is Close to 0 volts, normally the minimum, and 5 volts is typically the maximum. As an example, when a car's computer reads 2.5 volts from the TPS, it may mean the throttle is opened by 50% (your foot is pushing the pedal half-way down), and yes has a cam sensor its in between the cams behind the cam cover.

What is the running temperature for a kia sportage 2 litre deisil automatic

In the most general of terms a diesel engine would operate at 86-92 C.

However, much depends on the distance you are driving. On a very short trip(s) your needle is unlikely to get much above cold on the gauge. That's because an engine needs a minimum of 5 miles before the thermostat begins to open to allow coolant to circulate, and 10 miles before your engine is getting to 'normal operating temperature'.

The ideal position of the needle is N - normal ... midway between cold and hot.

If, on a long run, the needle doesn't get much past the cold mark it's probably due to either a faulty coolant sensor temperature sending a wrong reading to the gauge, or a thermostat which is stuck in the open position.

If the needle is indicating too hot - again it could be a faulty temperature sensor, a faulty thermostat - or other problems.

With a fully warmed engine and sitting in traffic/idling your needle would creep from Normal to Hot .. and then the electric fan would kick in.

My speedometer, tacometer, trip meter temperature gauges and a/c stopped working this morning. What should I check?

Sounds like a blown fuse. Check your manual for which fuse protects the items not working. Fuse box is located by left foot drivers side and also under hood drivers side.

My 1998 Kia Sportage the temperature gauge climbs almost off the chart when I'm travelling. If I put on the brakes or stop it goes to normal. Should I be worried?

If you do notice a decrease of coolant while this happens then it is cause for alarm since it is not a faulty gauge. You may have to check the radiator, the hoses and the engine for coolant leaks. Check also if the fan is working or if the coolant was low in the first place. You would need to just have it refilled.

KIA sportage 2001 overheating with a/c on .. No electric fan???

There should be a electric fan. Watch your temperature while it runs and when it gets up to around operating temperature the fan should kick in and run.

Have the radiator mounted fan checked.

It may not be turning on when you use the A/C.
