Your EGR is the problem with the erratic idle. However, this should not be effecting the cold starting as you have described. Having both of these problems together, without looking at the car, my first guess would be the EGR (find it,disconnect the hose, reach underneath and compress the plunger.

While it is compressed plug the hole with your finger. The plunger should not drop down. If it does, the EGR is faulty.

My second guess would be the Mass Air Flow Sensor (MAF). In this case, you should take take it to a shop. The procedure for testing it would be too much to describe here.

Either the Throttle Position switch, or the idle bypass system is out of spec. Check both systems to determine.

Also, I wil think it might be a bad battery. I think it's this beacuse, since it started running the battery recharged. Turn your lights on while the car is off and leave them on for 5 minutes see if your car will start.

Test it and tell us news.

Starter relay

I could not find one on my 1988 Camry either but if I read the shop manual correctly, there is no starter relay for cars with an automatic transmission. Cars with a manual transmission use a starter relay. There are other obvious errors in the shop manual wiring diagrams but this is what it implies.

My 1988 camry keeps having a recuring fault. when i turn the key nothing happens, the at other times it starts first time. its got a new starter motor and battery.

When it doesn't start, check to see if you are getting power to the starter from the ignition switch. You could have a bad ignition switch.
