Question about 1989 Ford Taurus

1 Answer

I have an 89 Taurus wagon 3.0 v6. Today when i came to a stop at a light the transmission slipped and wouldn't engage when i gave it gas. I had to put it in park turn it off and on for the transmission to thump back into drive. This has happened a few times recently. Is there any easy fix or is this going to be a spendy repair job?

This is a common problem, the valve body has some broken retainers internally. these retainers keep the valves from moving to far under normal conditions, they are U shaped and in time break and let the valve move to far when you come to a stop. The most common trait is that these will seem like everything is ok then, when you come to a stop it will not go unless you give it lots of throttle and then it may bang into gear-something you don't want to do or if you put it into park shut the car off and restart it it will usually go ok but may have a harsh engagement. trying to find a shop that will repair it may be another problem as some are not aware of the problem and Ford don't sell the retainers separately(They will want to sell a complete valve body assy). Retainers can be bought online at trans parts suppliers for around 4.00 ea. the labor will vary but you have to remove side pan, valve body and then just inspect which one of the retainers are broke that may take careful inspection to find broken one, replace retainer or retainers that are broke, reinstall valve body and side pan, have a new filter and fluid installed and you should be good to go. the labor for area's will naturally be different but a qualified shop could charge 300.00-400.00 labor 5.00 ea retainer, fluid (mercon V) and filter

My 2003 envoy will not engage reverse slips into second gear and will not engage overdrive.. It gave no warning signs of transmission failure.. What is the problem??

It could be a bad transmission sensor, but the check engine light must be on, if it's this way take it to an speciallist to connect the scanner and this will tell you what is wrong with the transmission.

I need a new Trans for a 1996 ford Taurus GL wagon.

The best way is to use the vehicle VIN number, here is a link to a Ford Vin Number Look-up site, that will tell you the transmission code and the type of transmission you have:

My 2000 Toyota 4runner V6 125k miles automatic transmission started slipping on cold starts especially in the morning. After starting up, putting in drive and pressing the gas pedal first gear doesn't...

Low transmission fluid is usually the only reason power engages late or slippage occurs. But changing the transmission fluid again would not hurt. The stuff really shouldn't deteriorate like engine oil. Be sure to not run the vehicle many miles until the problem is completely resolved < 100 miles. One easy check would be to make sure the transmission lines are well connected and maintain pressure as well as fluid level. The good thing is that Toyota has a reputation of very good transmissions.

96 taurus wagon goes to neutral when vehicle comes to full stop.

That would be your neutral park switch is bad or broken. If the shifter linkage is not aligned with the neutral park switch it will not work properly. Located on drivers side on top of Trans.

1999 Ford Taurus Wagon stays in 1st gear

Most Ford Taurus wagons have a transmission that generally goes first. that's the main reason. Just something to do with the way they are built. The only advice that I could offer is either replace the tranny or just not run the a/c. Usually it's just the motor working twice as hard running the a/c and that in turn puts the computer into the phase of lower gears for the transmission. there in being the problem.
