Follow the upper hose to the metal pipe that is attached to the lower intake mainfold. The thermostat is behind that pipe. They are a PIA to replace. You need a 13mm socket, swivel, extensions, ratchet, and 13mm wrench. Sometimes it helps to remove the throttle body. Most of the time they are replaced along with the lower intake gaskets which fail quite often.

My 1999 chevy malibu overheats and i cant figure out why. i was told the thermostat needs changing what else could it be?

depending on symptoms, could be internal/external leak, water pump, thermostat, or even an air lock depending on what it does and what your doing when it overheats. so what happens?

Several things ... best guess, in order:
1. (very likely) Radiator fan is not blowing (turn on car and a/conditioner.
When compressor kicks in, the radiator fan must blow). If it ims not blowing,
the radiator fan motor may be burned out ($40).
2. Check / replace "cooling fan" fuse ($1) and / or "cooling fan" relay switch
3. Could be (not likely) thermostat sticking shut. Replace thermostat ($20)
4. Could be radiator hose collapse (not very likely) ($18)
5. Radiator clog or hose leak (possible)
6. Head gasket broken (not likely unless you don't fix current problem) ($150)
The more detail of the symptoms, the better we can assist you.
Hope this helps!

Locate and Fix a thermostat in a 2000 Malibu.

The thermostat on this car was made retarded. Its located real close the the exhaust below the air intake. If you trace your upper hose you will see it connects to a housing held in with 2 nuts over studs I think. Its just really hard to get to, you might need a flex head wrench to get to it.I've put off doing my cooling system because of this.
