Knocking feeling against or in sterring column-2008 impala

When I am driving my impala I can feel a cluncking or knocking in the steering column. I had a Trail Blazer prior and I never had anything like that. Any ideas. It has been doing it since I got it.

I just noticed the knocking noise about two weeks ago. I have had my car for about 6 months and realized the noise because I had a Chev pickup truck with the same annoying noise.

I have a 2008 LTZ and I have a knocking in the steering column that started about a week ago. Bringing it to the dealer this week, and will drop the diagnosis from the dealer on this site.

Have my 06 in the shop today for the same thing. Only 60,000 mi. on it. They told me $270 just for the part to replace it plus tons of labor! Seems to be a very common problem with this model, don't you think that GM would want to do something a bout it before it's to late...

Same problem here. I purchased two 2008 Impalas, my wife's drives fine, mine rougher ride and I feel lots of road noise in the steering wheel and gas pedal. While driving the passenger seat shakes (front to back) and sometimes the steering wheel fights me. Had it to the dealership four times in as many months, each time they claim to find and fix a problem, but have yet to fix the problem I keep taking it in for...

The half shaft in the steering linkage needs replaced. I experienced this in a 2003 impala as well as in a 2003 chevvy pickup.

Knocks when you turn, steering column jerks

Hi there - S Wilkins here.
Could be a front hub bearing or axle CV joint.
You may be able to raise the front wheels and move them around and find what is loose.

Occasional bumping feeling in the steering column

I can think of one of two things:
Make sure your power steering fluid is full. My Bonneville was low, and it did some weird stuff.

But more likely it's your intermediate shaft. This shaft looks like a mini drive shaft with two miniture u-joints. It's located at the end of the steering column and passes thru the firwall. It's about 12 inches long. It has a slip spline that starts to not-slip, and you will feel a light thump in the steering wheel when turning. Sometimes thumps a little, sometimes alot.

There are several articles at the forum at: http://www.naioa.com/v2/modules.php?name=Forums

I decided to just pull my steering column on my 2002 Impala and lubricate the spline with regular grease.

I have a 1998 suburban when turning my sterring feels like there is a dead spot it is like the sterring has play like you have no controlfor a second then it goes away

If you going to try to diagnose it yourself you will want to get a friend to help spot you.
Typically your symptom is due to a worn out steering component. You will want to inspect wheel-bearings, ball-joints, tie-rod ends, idler arm, drag-link, and steering box.
If you need more specific info then let me know.

Shift lever on column came loose inside column.

no, u shouldn't have to pull the steering wheel. pull the cover off the column, there are 2 or 4 nuts that hold the column up to the dash, remove them and let the column lay on the seat- u should disconnect your battery before doing so. you can get to the shift tube from there- most likely u'll find that the bushings have gone bad and need replacement.

Drunken steering

This system has an electronic variable orifice steering system. There is a sensor on the column at the base, it is a 3 wire sensor. This sensor will give you the tight or loose feeling. It is easy to change with basic tools. The orifice this sensor controls is a 2 wire solinoid on the pressure port of the power steering pump. If you have changed the pump look to be sure you still have this 2 wire solinoid. Good Luck.

Jerky steering in 1999 GMC Suburban

A common problem with this model. Its the sterring speed sensor.A small disc shaped switch at the bottom of the steering shaft next to the floor. IT actually slips over the steering shaft, so, you'll have to disconnect shaft, pull column back towads you to replace. The reason for this switch is to stiffen steering at higher speed.Once it goes bad it starts sending mixed signals to the steering box. A simple fix? Unplug it at the switch like I did mine after I replaced it the second time.
