I THOUGHT MY POWER STEERING FLUID WAS LEAKING FROM THE LINES, GOT UNDER VAN AND FOUND IT IS LEAKING UNDER WHERE STEERING WHEEL HOOKS INTO THE RACK & PINION. THERE IS A BOLT AND A PLASTIC ROUND BUSHING. LEAKING BY BUSHING.THERE IS A LINE COMING IN ON THE OTHER SIDE NOT SURE IF IT IS LEAKING BUT DRIP IS COMING FROM BETWEEN BOLT AND PLASTIC BUSHING. WONDERING IF THERE IS ANY INTERNAL O RING OR SEAL BEHIND BUSHING OR IF THE BUSHING HAS GONE BAD BUT DOESN'T REALLY APPEAR TO BE WORN. HAD A NEW RACK & PINION PUT IN ABOUT A YEAR AGO.

Power steering fluid leak in 99 Toyota Corolla

look for split in the hard line where fluid is leaking. If you see split, change the line only. make sure power steering reservoir is filled and rack and pinion is full (charge with steering wheel left/right motion). You should be able to remove wheel and inside wheel panel to see power steering fluid shooting out of any hole. There is hydraulic pressure on the lines.

Im assuming that you mean power steering fluid is leaking... top off the fluid, replace cap, and have a freind turn the steering wheel back and forth while you check the hoses and lines for leaking fluid.

Steering hard to turn to the left like power steering is out but turns ok to the right. Checked power steering fluid. It is OK

bad steering problems,,your steering rack most likely, but, have you recently been stuck in ditch? when wheels are straight, look at front of car when parked. do wheels look funny? one going one way, and the other going the other? may be alignment. is it leaking any fluid on either side of the front of the car? drivers side? passenger side? if it's not out of alignment,,,wheels out of alignment,,the steering rack is the problem. it may be faulty. if not leaking fluid,it may still be bad. first i would make a visual test look under the vehicle while someone turned the steering wheel to right and left while car is in park, emergency brake on!! look at the steering arms while they turn the steering wheel from right to left. no fluid leaks? any resistance in turning the wheel? any leaks,if so,go to leak and repair with steering line replacement.no leaks? suspect a bad steering rack. hope this helps and thank you for choosing fixya.com i love to volunteer

When turning steering wheel I have squeaking sounds coming from inside rubber boots that cover rods that steer front wheels and the power steering fluid has a burnt smell. ( I don't know the name of these...

This is the steering rack. If it's not leaking fluid out of the bellows more than likely the fluid needs to be changed.
This can be done by removing the 2 lines from the pump that attach to the rack draining the fluid, then reconnect the lines and refill with fresh power steering fluid.
When draining make sure to take the cap/dipstick off of the pump.

I have a 2003 Ford Escape that is leaking power steering fluid. I replaced the power steering pump and hoses but it is still leaking. It only leaks when the Escape is turned off.

It might be the rack and pinion kit (seals)

I had this problem 2 months ago... replaced the powersteering pump 3 times until I convinced the mechanics to look at the rack and pinion. there they found the leak, especially when I turned the wheel.. They first kept telling me there was air in the lines and it would go away. but that never happened.

I have already changed the belt and the tensioner and again the power steering stopped working the power steering fluid good i was wondering what is wrong now

1st make sure your power steering belt is stiil on@ tight. if so i would suspect a bad steering rack @ pinion. do you hear cracking or popping when you turn the wheel? is there any fluid leaking from under the steering rack under front of car?the steering pump may be air locked, keep turning the wheel back @ forth to see if it loosens up any at all.hope this helps!!

I noticed my power steering fluid was way below the low mark so refilled it. I noticed a month later a small noise coming from my steering wheel, checked the fluid level again and it was low again. What...

Check the high pressure line from the pump to the steering gear (rack) if the hose is good, check the rubber bellows at each end of the rack, if they are leaking oil, the rack will need to be replaced. If you dont have much money, the rack could be put off, but be sure to keep the fluid level full, you dont want to run it dry and ruin the pump. The hose isnt real big bucks, but the rack will be, plus an alignment.
