Question about 1998 Ford Explorer

Can you help with my 1998 Ford Exp. (E.B.) problems...the dealers seem to think we're all rich.

Hi,
I've been having problems with my 1998 Ford Explore Eddie Bauer concerning the lights intermittently going on and off and the indicator light switch not working, also the radio lights went out about a year ago, now my CD player won't work, my antenna won't go down, my rear wind shield wiper stopped for no apparent reason, all lights on the clock stopped around the time of the radio malfunction and since reading this board , I recalled an intermittent clicking noise around the steering column...I thought these things were due to the age of the car, but have since realized that I'm not the only one with these issues...can you help me? I can't afford the price of the dealer repairs as I'm retired on a fixed income and female with limited knowledge of how to make these repairs myself.

I had posted a long statement about my ordeal and lost it, so I'll just thank you for trying. Part of my problem was a bad alternator. I'm still having problems with the radio and antenna to which the service techs' only solution was to buy new replacements as if money grows on trees...I was told, after scolding my rep that they are told to go that route because it's more cost effective...yeah, right. For them, not us. I swore off Fords years ago and I'm doing it again because they just don't compete with foreign car producers. Your problem with your air maybe the alternator because my air went out because of mine and was working fine after I replaced it. I don't know what the keyless entry problem is related to..I do know that if you have a key fob that's not working you have to pay $$ to get it reprogramed. GOOD LUCK and thanks again for trying.

I have the radio lights going out too, the antenna will not go down, and it tends to stall out. CD player still works but have no clue what track I am on. Was told I would have to get a whole new factory stereo system. Oh, now I can't lock my doors automatically from the keyless entry and unlocking it takes forever. I have the same model and year and make as you. I'm just glad it still goes from A to B. My new problem is my air conditioner is horrible and does not blow ice cold. I wish I had a solution for you.

Black smoke from exhaust

Hi Paul,
I think you're right - it sounds like you're running to RICH (too much fuel / not enough air), but I would think that you'd see the check engine light on.
If you are too rich, there's probably an O2 sensor or other computer issue going on - and if allowed to persist, you'll probably end up with a clogged catalytic converter. As long as the sensor / computer is adjusting your air : fuel ratio, there little you can do to override it. I believe the computer will continue to adjust the mixture to get what it wants to see by the O2 sensor in the exhaust.
Bring it to a mechanic / dealer to get this fixed correctly - before you waste any more fuel or cause additional problems with the cat converter or other parts.

Good luck!

An O2 sensor will not cause a miss, period. I would think the problem may lie with the #3 coil, or the wiring to it. What are the trouble code(s), give me those and I can be more helpful
