next the timing is regulated by centrifugal advance if electronic or points and by the crankshaft position sensor if ECM controlled ( some after market distributors that are used in place of points units have a small sensor in the distributor that can adjust the timing according to engine rpms, but it cannot make allowances for mixture and so they can advance the timing but not take into account anything else which sometimes results in detonation under certain throttle settings
so initial setting for most cars is 10-12 degrees btdc at idle and with engine rpms set up to 3000 rms it may advance to 25-30 degrees depending on the advance mechanisms
with ECM units the timing is controlled by the crank position sensor and is set to parameters according to engine rpms and air/fuel ratio settings but it still has a basic 10-12 degrees btdc on starting
to fail smog tests you probably do not have a working cat converter and other problems besides timing
set it at 12 degrees btdc where it should be
If it has electronic timing it will advance /retard from that point and not as you expect to go to the correct setting
200 cid 6 cylinder: dwell 35 to 38 degrees, point gap .024 - .026, initial timing: 6 btdc for manual, 12 btdc for automatic. You'll need a semi-decent dwell/tach - something in the 25 to 30 buck range should do nicely. Good luck.
According to my Chilton book it is 4 degrees Before TDC for a standard transmission and 10 degrees Before TDC on the automatic. The marks are on the pulley it says, not the damper. It doesn't say what size the engine is. It does list a 170 and a 144 for 1963. In 1963 the timing is 6 degrees BTDC for the standard and 12 BTDC for the automatic and the mark is on the damper. The firing order is 1-5-4-8-6-3-7-2, distributor turns counter-clockwise. The ignition timing can be set using marks on the vibration damper. The wide mark is TDC (Top Dead Center), each mark after the wide mark represents 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 degrees before TDC. Set timing 3 degrees BTDC (Before Top Dead Center). In addition, valve timingis set like this: Intake opens: 12 degrees BTDC Exhaust Closes: 8 degrees ATDC
Ignition timing should be set at 10 degrees BTDC (before top dead center), with vacuum advance hose disconnected and plugged, engine idling at 800 rpm or less.
mild cam is to generic, set the timing like this for a high lift cam, advance it untiol the engine pings lightly, then back the timing of 2-3 degrees's
