Question about 1996 Chevrolet Impala SS

Engine want crank

Motor cut off at 4 way stop. Engine was running like sewing machine prior to it cutting off. Starter was not staying engaged to fly wheel. Starter tested bad so replaced. Engine will turn over but will not crank. It spits back thru the intake. Motor was completely remanfactured 12 months ago. No noise or any problems prior to this. Took off the belt and made sure all pulleys are free turning. Took out all spark plugs on left side of motor. No problems apparent. Could this be an issue with the opti spark module? Could the timing chain or drive sprokets be broken? Engine has no coolant issues or oil consumption problems. Every item in engine was replaced except roller cam. Machine shop measured and found to be in like new condition when motor was remanfactured. Could a simple sensor cause this engine not to crank? Need some answers.

I APPRECIATE YOUR ANSWER, HOWEVER I JUST GOT BACK FROM VACATION AND I PLAN TO CHECK WITH CODE MACHINE THIS WEEK AND WILL BE BACK IN TOUCH IN A FEW DAYS. I NEED TO CHECK THE OPTI SPARK MODULE AND SEE IF IT IS OK AND THEN CHECK THE TIMING. IF THE OPTI SPARK MODULE IS GOOD THEN I WILL CHECK THE TIMING. THEN I WILL DO A DEEPER PROBE TO SEE IF I CAN DETERMINE WHAT CAUSED IT TO JUMP TIME IF THAT IS THE CASE.

An IC (internal combustion ) engine is dependent on the spark timing for initial start (crank).here since most of it was remanufactured , the spark timing is at fault.
TIME the spark a few degrees before TDC and see the difference .i hope this solves your problem.

How do you tell if the starter has gone out

starter failure is indicated by several actions
1--- very slow in turning the engine ( something like a flat battery)---bushes shot and armature poling on shoes-- repairable
2--- clicking solenoid on starter but not spinning motor--- faulty solenoid contact points not completing power circuit--- solenoid replacement
3--starter spins fine on one start but will do nothing on restart or will restart if the engine is turned a fraction by hand-- dry joints in commutator bar in armature starter stops spinning on start and the faulty bar is under a brush thereby not making a circuit on restart--- repairable
4--starter shows signs of burning/ heat on the outside -- starter held in engagement with the fly wheel and burnt out the wiring
5--- starter spins and engages the ring gear but doesn't move the crank--- over run clutch on pinion of starter is failed --- replaceable
if the starter is what is known as a stepped starter ( body of the starter is not in direct line with the pinion nut works through an idler gear) there could be failures in the drive of that idler gear
fortunately most starters will last the life of the motor if used correctly ( not winding over until the battery is flat)
if the engine is held in good tune then a starter will operate for as little as 15 seconds to start an engine and most starter problems faults can be traced to
failed cells in battery --- have a load test done
dirty battery posts and terminals-- should be shiny clean and tight
bad ground wire point on engine for battery lead
faulty starter relays
problem ignition switches

Car in park turn key starter engages engine starts and you can hear the Bendix still spinning in the ring gear put car into drive and then they stop spending

Does the starter engage again when you go back to park ?
Shifting from park to drive would cut the circuit from the key switch to the starter. The neutral safety switch prevents you from cranking the engine in drive or reverse.
I would say the key switch is not turning off power to the starter when you go from start to run.

How do you know its the fuel relay? My 94 roadmaster starts good when first crank but when cut off and then i try to cut it on again it'll start but then cut off. Changed starter and has gas but it wont...

this is indicative of a faulty ignition switch or ignition circuit.
When you have it in the start position the power is divided between the coil and the starter motor. hence it starts
when you let the key go to the run position the power is stopped to the starter but a new circuit is opened to the coil hence providing power to the coil for the engine to keep running. There is a resistance wire to the coil that lowers the voltage for running. Your problem will be in that run circuit if not in the ignition switch

1992 subaru legacy starter wont engage fully and makes a loud grinding noise

Sounds like it is not toughing 100% and making full gear contact with the fly-wheel. Replace starter or the misalignment can burr the flywheel causing rounding and subsequent damage to the device.

Starter clicks will not turn engine over

next is jumper cable jump start to good running helper car battery.
that cuts cause in 1/2 , 15min works.
car starts, your battery is bad, or not charging, running, or is only discharged. (left head lights on)
wont crank. now?\\
hot wire the solenoid, for cutting possibles in 1/2 again.
what transmission? in car?

see tricks here. (and the hot wire trick)

I saw something on another site. and it was doing the same thing you have said and it turned out to be the ignition module the electrics on the ignition. remove it off the ignition and open it up and check that the solid parts. some suffer from dry joints. 81036c61-543f-4d51-8488-531140cad9d9.jpg

it sounds like the starter solenoid contacts are not separating to stop the starter from turning.the run on is due to the starter not stopping causing the motor to continue to spin.replace the starter unit as it will have damage due to being engaged with the motor running, also have the flywheel inspected to make sure the teeth are not damaged on it.

1991 mustang 2.l starter staying engaged

what happens if you pull the shift lever into gear to cut off the neutral-park safety switch? This cuts pwer from the key to the starter solenoid. If that fixes it, replace the igniton switch.
