I have a 1997 Ford Aerostar, and there is a leak where the transmission is and leaks badly, a mechanic said your headgasket has blown and i just want to revise this over with you if that is true, cause i look under the van its more near where the shifter is between the passenger and driver seat, how much would you think it would cost to fix and part all together for this or what kinda damage can happen if i keep using this van like it is.. i keep pouring water in and they say i might have to change the thermostat also if i change the head gasket thank you

Blown head gasket ... you keep pouring water in ... it is going into the engine contaminating the oil ... Get rid of the car. Dont consider repairing this 14 year old car. It will cost you more than $2000.00 if you can get it that cheap. Get rid of the car.

hello there yes the they said the head gasket has gone on it the person keeps pouring water into it not sure but he said it helps and may cost $400 all 2gether to repair, and thermostat he was selling it for $2400, and after he noticed that problem i guess he talked to a mechanic and said it would cost that much so he dropped his price down to $900 now for that van.... and the sliding door sticks when opening, when you drive you can smell the i think something well what ever that liquid draining out of the transmission area i seen it and i thought to my self it might be easy to fix... everything else seems to run ok but that part...

The only real 'fix' i have found for a blown head gasket is a replacement engine. Anything short of that is a temporary fix. You have had water in your engine for who knows how long ... cant be good for your engine ...

My experience is based on 4 head gaskets ... I repaired the first three ... I replaced engine #4 and that was helpful.

FORD FOCUS LOSING COOLANT SUDDENLY

Check for white smoke out the exhaust. If you have white smoke then you are burning coolant and probably have a blown headgasket. Another way for checking a blown headgasket is to open the coolant overflow tank and run the car. If you see constant bubbles in the coolant then you have a blown headgasket.

DO NOT DRIVE YOUR CAR IF the gasket it blown as the engine will overheat and the cylinder head can warp/crack.

If there is no white smoke from the exhaust and no bubbles in the coolant system there is probably jsut a leak in the coolant system, visually check all the pipes and check around the waterpump housing for leaks. If you can't see a leak then pressure test the coolant system. A pressure test will push coolant out the leak and should help you find where it is.

Hope this helps

My mazda tribute 2001 coolent level goes down quickly without a leak

if it's getting hot also [ i guess if its getting hot it should be leaking out the overflow tube] i would think it's a worn radiator cap or check the oil for water in it [look on dipstick for cloudy looking oil] blown headgasket.
radiator cap easy fix.
blown headgasket, mechanics expensive fix

Aerostar transmission leaks

Depending on where the leaks are comming from determins the course of action that nees to be taken. If the leak is on the rear output shaft for the drive shaft, the seal can be replaced by removing the shaft and pulling out the seal. This is a relativly simple repair. If the leak is between the motor and transmission, it would be the torque converter seal and this requires the removal of the transission. If it is leaking from the side of the transmission, the transmission needs to be removed and taken apart by a professional. Check your transmission cooler lines. These can seep and the oil will run down the outside of the tube to a low spot and drip far away from the source.

Transmission does not downshift evey time

THIS IS MOST OFTEN CAUSED BY AN INTERNAL LEAK INSIDE THE TRANS MISSION, TRY CHANGING THE FLUID AND FILTER AND ADDING A CAN OF LUCAS OIL BRAND TRANS FLUID STOP LEAK AND CONDITIONER, THIS MAY CURE THE PROBLEM.

89 Ford aerostar with a bad leak

I would place my bets on the rear freeze plug being out. You will have to pull the transmission to service it. Start with the simple stuff and pull the transmission and inspect, damage to the rear of the block causing this type of leak next to never happens. I have not seen it in more than 25 years.

Leaking anti freeze

If you are not seeing any coolent of the floor when parked, the chances are that you may have an internal engine leak, such as leaking thru headgasket and coming out as steam. Take your van to PepBoys for pressure testing for which they carge about $40.
