it depends what caused the fault, there are two types, soft and hard faults. Soft fault will automatically reset the EML when you rectify, Hard fault will need to be manually reset.

We had a similar problem and you might wish to investigate the following
Check that the steering column has not created a cascade of (?copper) shavings onto your ignition circuits in the steering column itself (from the power steering assembly in the top of the steering wheel head) - we had this on our 1992 LHD column gear Ducato and it made the glow lamps come on and light up all the time causing overheating and smoking , cleaning the circuits and wiring in there and lubricating the disc sorted it out - after some costly cylinder head removal etc - we learnt the hard way !!!!!
