It seems to be getting stuck in gear. The rpm will go up but it wont downshift. The fluid is fine, nice and pink, not burnt at all!!! I was told I cannot hook it to the computer at the car shop because the it wasn't possible to check the transmission through the computer til 1996. Im not sure if this is true or not. It puzzles me also because it doesn't do this all the time. Over a three month period there has been times when it has not happened for 2 or 2 1/2 weeks! Other times it will constantly act up for days at a time. I want to fix this problem. I love my jeep and just want to know what is wrong before I go into getting a new transmission. Thank you, Sheila

They are right, in 1995 the transmission ran by a computer for upshifts. But the ecm does control 4th gear. So it won't upshift? It stays in a lower gear? What gear does it hold? Sounds like a governor problem or a valve body issue.

Yes. It seems lately to be getting stuck from first to second gear.....when this all started it was from second to third gear. Now second to third is usually fine but now first to second is sticking. I have no idea what is going on. What is a governor or a valve body and how much are we talking? LOL

Also wanted to let you know ,in case I didn't put it in my question, my grand cherokee is a Laredo 4x4. It is always using over drive unless I push the button to shut it off. Does this make a difference? It has first, second, overdrive, neutral, and reverse on the floor but no drive. Everyone keeps telling me to keep pushing the button to shut the overdrive off but I figured that they would have put a drive gear on the floor if it was bad to have it in overdrive all the time. Just thought you should know :)

You should run it in overdrive all the time unless you are pulling a heavy load or driving in a real hilly area. After it shifts from 1 to 2, 2 to 3 feels fine? I would start with adjusting the 2nd gear band. You can do this yourself if you have some mechanical ability. If you don't want to try it yourself I would take it to a shop and get the transmission serviced, get the bands adjusted and add a product called (lubegard). At a shop this should cost about 160-175.

Downshift and gets stuck in first gear

TCC switch located in the trans axle is more than likely the culprit and needs to be replaced. take this one to a well known transmission shop. shouldn't run you more than a couple hundred dollars.

You say transmission fluid levels are good. Is it a nice red or pink color or is it an orange, brown to black color. Does the vehicle actually shift into gear, the linkage from the gear shift from park to drive or reverse maybe be unhooked you can check that out also. Does the trans fluid smell burnt, should be kind of a sweet smell. Good Luck

If I'm not mistaken this vehicle is equipped with a downshift cable. Make sure it is properly connected and is free of interference. Should be connected at the carburetor near the accelerator cable. Make sure it is actuated when the accelerator is pressed. You may also want to make sure if you have a vacuum line running to the tail end of the transmission that it is free of water from your steam cleaning.
