Hi, I have a 2002 Jaguar S type my transmission has been slipping recently and the gearbox fault message has appeared in amber, I’ve been told if I add Lucas oil transmission fix to the exciting transmission fluid this will solve the problem, also I’ve been told Jaguar has a seal transmission. What can I do?

Whenever this warning light or any other stays on in the dash it is indicating that the systems control module (or the system sensor in the case of lights like low oil pressure, door open indicators etc.) has detected a fault, it then disables the system (this applies to ABS,TCS, TCM, SRS and BCM faults and others) as long as the light is on. You must now have the dealer hook up a special electronic diagnostic tool and "scan" the system for the fault code that is stored for the problem(s)

You need a dealer, the wiper motor is controlled by the BCM and can be run through an active test to see what is wrong. To do this test you need a special scan tool.

The message center on the console says ''gearbox fault'' There is nothing in the manual about that message. a one time event at ~35 MPH the transmission slipped and the engine RPMs Raced.

What is the mileage on this vehicle? Experiencing similar issue on my 2002 and is about to replace the fluid in the next 24 hrs. I will post findings after. Could be old fluid or sensors & connectors.

GEARBOX FAULT MESSAGE

i had the same problem with my s-type, when i went to jaguar dealer for diagnostic and they told me it was trans problem, need new trans and will cost me $4500 to fix it, so i think you will be better off looking for a salvage trans to put it in your car, it will cost you around $1500-$2500 including labor. i hope that will help some of you with gear box fault massage. oh try and find some one who knows a lot about jaguar before you send the car for trans repairs.

2002 Jaguar X-Type slipping of trans, GEARBOX FALUT displayed.

Hi

Gearbox is a sealed unit now, from the factory, so no topping up possible.

Sounds like major problem in transmission.

Time to say goodbye, while it is still driving !

Good Luck !

A FixYa Rating would be appreciated thanks !

Jaguar X SE 2.5 gearbox problem

hey johnhoile,

Sorry to break the bad new to you, put you most likely need a transmission depending on what codes are stored in the system. I have dont numerous automatic transmission on x-types all they all started with a gear box fault light on.

If the codes have something to do with a incorrect gear ration that is a guarantee red flag for a new transmission

Gearbox fault of Jaguar S Type

unfortunately when that code, and that gear box fault light comes on, its pretty much game over for the transmission. It only a matter of time before performance of the transmission gets worse and worse. BUT that transmission is VERY easy to replace, i would check out a few trustworthy independent shops to give you a better price! I am usually a die-hard dealership, having been working at this jaguar land rover dealership for the last 2 years, but you are pretty much for sure going to be a cheaper price on the labor and like i said it is a pretty easy task.

My only precaution MAKE SURE IF YOU GETTING A USED TRANSMISSION THAT YOU GET SOME TYPE OF WARRANTY ON IT. Too many times have I seen customers loose thousands of dollars paying someone to put a used engine or transmission and have it fail almost right away.
