The standard drain plug is on the rear of the sump on the bottom edge slightly right of centre the bolt is a 17mm hex socket type, you have to remove the under shield first to see it,It is possible someone has changed the original bolt for a bigger one as they are prone for tearing the threads out of the aluminium sump ,
is it a 1.8 turbo or 2.8 V6 or 2.7 biturbo V6 ? on most models what you will be looking for is a 3 letter code like ATQ or APW and is normally on a sticker on the timing belt cover, it is also stamped into the engine on a ledge up high. if no luck there check the owners manual, around the 3rd page there will be a sticker that was put in the book during predelivery inspection this sticker is about 3 inches by 3 inches and filled with id codes for almost everything. If the pdi wasn't done right another copy of the same sticker will be under or next to the spare tire in the spare tire well.
If it's the same as the 99 2.8 V6 in the A4, it's quite a ways inside the front of the engine. You have to remove a lot of the front of the engine and you'll find it partially hidden behind the timing belt tensioner. Foolish place to put such a part unfortunately, but at least on my A4 that's where it is.
