First, go to AutoZone, Big A or any chain autoparts store, most have free CEL code reading, that will tip you off in the right direction.
Sounds like you have a EVAP issue, and the fuel system is losing fuel pressure, so when you press the gas, you are calling for more fuel allowing it to pressurize faster. Instead on quickly turning the key on, turn it to ACC (Lights and chime) wait 5 sec, then try to start. Most cars will start the fuel pump and pressurize the system for a quick start.
I agree with Peter on this one. Sounds like low fuel pressure. First thing is to be sure that you have around 55-60 psi when you turn the key on and running should be around 55. If the pressure drops much below these no.'s the fuel pump may need to be changed. Don't forget to check and/or change the fuel filter also.
May be the starter or fuel pump. Might not be getting gas after turning it off. the gas may be settling to fast into the fuel pump and none staying in the engine. My friends SUV does not start unless you pump the gas pedal. Not an expert but its what i know it could possibly be.
Seems like the choke is not turning on. The 22r uses a carb if I'm not mistaken. pump it a couple of times then try pressing the pedal completely down before trying to start it. Then press the pedal half way down. the point is to set the choke when you press the pedal all the way down.
signs of a bad fuel pressure regulator. the vehicle runs rough, the engine will not start usually in the mornings. many times engine starts but stalls shortly after starting. a bad regulator can result in fouled plugs. black soot on plugs, blake smoke from tailpipe, running rough, stalling. you could have residue in fuel tank and need to change fuel filter again. have a very good day !!
Could be a fuel pump although they normally only hum very briefly and change to a clicking sound that means they are maintaining fuel line pressure that was built up quickly when the ignition is turned on.
BTW; pumping the gas pedal is a good way to flood the engine; if the choke is still operational, pressing the pedal once to the floor and then releasing it should set the choke and enrich the air-fuel mix for starting.
If the engine get flood, holding the gas pedal to the floor will help dry out the plugs so they can fire again.
what happens when it does finally run, does it run rough, black smoke?? if the fuel pressure regulator is leaking it COULD causet his problem. Find the regulator and take the vac hose off, if there is fuel in the hose, replace the fuel pressure regulator.
