Question about 1990 Mazda RX-7

1 Answer

Engine Sutters upon Startup

Sporadicly sputters and backfires when started. It acts like it has just enough power to keep running. After running a few seconds it smooths out and runs fine. I have not noticed an pattern for this problem occurring.

I tried the following without resolving this problem:
1) added Sea Foam to a tank of gas,
2) replaced the Leading coil & ignitor

Could you suggest something to test and/or replace?

Thanks, Jim

Sounds like a timing issue with the symptoms you gave. Have it checked by a good mechanic with good knowledge of your make. Also some of the after market programmers can create major concerns. Try returning everything to factory settings and see if all issues dissappear before going to a mechanic.

The Engine keeps cutting out especially going up hills. It acts like it is not getting enough fuel, also when you punch the gas it spitsand sputters. However, it does not backfire

yes, it sounds like a fuel pressure issue. Try pulling the vacuum line off the fuel pressure regulator at the end of the fuel rail. Plug the hose with a golf tee or screw and see if the car runs any better. If you can, have the fuel pressure tested and also replace the fuel filter if you haven't done that in a while. If you do all this and the pressure is too low, you will need to replace the pump. Let me know if you have more questions.

Sudden loss of power, Backfiring, starts then stalls

Your timing belt could be broken. You want to have this checked as soon as possible to prevent any further engine problems.
