The engine should be warm to hot when you check it. Make sure not to overfill it.

You have to add the fluid through the dip stick opening.

Sounds like you need to replace your transmission fluid and the pressure may be low. When was the last time that you did this? You should replace the transmission filter and the transmission fluid. You can get these at a local shop like AutoZone, Checker, NAPA, or even a fleet farm. They should also be able to tell you how much transmission fluid that you will need. I would go to one of the first three suggestions since all they do is car parts. They would also be able to answer many questions that you may have but let me know of anything else that you want to know. If the filter has pieces of metal in it when you replace it, then your gears are being stripped, if you find nothing then your gears are fine. The cost of the filter/fluid shoudn't be too much.

good luck with this

your car's computer controls the shifting, if the engine isn't warmed up well, this may cause it to shift hard or if it is running hot. Different things could cause this. Should should get it diagnosed at one of the first 3 places I suggested. They can hook it up to a device that checks the computer.

the torque converter could be having internal problems making the computer shift the car hard to help protect the transmission but it can't be known for sure unless somebody physically checks it. Autozone is where I would try first if anything, but please let me know if you have any other questions, thanks

I assume this is an automatic transmission? (Otherwise, you control the shifting...)

Your transmission gears might be worn. You should take it to a reputable mechanic.

Draining the fluid is easier than replacing the TC. I would try a drain an filter first, then move on from there.

What is a rough shift

A rough shift is exactly what it implies. The shifting of gears should be a smooth transition. Rough shifting causes jerking, gear chatter, and undue strain on the components.

If it is having trouble making it out of second gear but shifts through the first two smoothly your tranny is either low on fluid, or needing replacement.

Tranmission problem is not shifting automatic any more get stock

Check the transmission fluid... although I doub this would be the case since you are able to do it manually. If the fluid level is fine, you should have the transmission checked by an authorized mechanic. It can be something as simple as an adjustment, but may also be something more serious.

No reverse sometimes geo metro a/t

The accelator cable is "Y" shaped. one side goes to the carb and the other to the tranmission. If you have the carb.side too tight it will give you the problem that you are having.
