My father recently rebuilt the top end of his engine on his 1989 Pontiac Trans Am GTA. He took apart the TPI unit, removed the fuel rail, pulled out the distributor (of course this is all supposed to be done) all the way down to the intake manifold. The gaskets here had to be replaced. After putting it back together, it wont fire. It turns over fine, but will not fire. Also, he says there are two wires (a red and a white) coming from the distributor that he doesn't know where they go. Can you suggest any solutions?

If the Oil Sending Unit becomes defective, it often keeps the fuel pump running even after the car's engine is shut off. Replacing the Oil Sending Unit should correct the problem. Believe it or not Pontiac uses the oil sending unit as a back up to power the fuel pump.
Pull the shifer back out look inside with a lite and sure all shift rails are in the nuetral position and install the shifter carefully into the hole alining it with the shifter rails.experiance is neededJohnny
check fuel regulator. chek fuel pressure w/gauge see if have rite pressure if does put vacuum on regulatoer w/vacuum pump if pressure drops replace regulator
I would suspect either the tps or mas air flow sensor, you can unplug the mass air flow sensor ( located in air tube to throttle body) see if this helps. The mass airflow sensor may need to be replaced. please rate if this helps
The 5.0L injector is sized to deliver approximately 4.05 milligrams of fuel with a 2.5 millisecond pulse or 18.13 lbs per hr at approximately 36 PSI. The 5.7L injector is sized to deliver approximately 4.83 milligrams of fuel with a 2.5 millisecond pulse or 23.92 lbs per hr at approximately 43.5 PSI. This information is typical for all manufacturers and flow rates will vary slightly even between identicle injectors. Good luck and hope this helps.
I would first check the map sensor. If that is good, I would check the tps. There are test procedures at the link below. You will need an ohmmeter to test the sensors. A vacuum pump is not necessary. Just use your lungs to pull a vacuum on the map sensor just to verify it is working. Repair Guides Electronic Engine Controls Camshaft Position Sensor AutoZone...
you first have to take off the hood (2 bolts on each side where the hood meets the hinge) then take off the hood hinges (3 or 4 bolts on each side on top of fender) and after all that your hood hinges should be off. on each end there will be a metal retainer that holds the strut on the hinge, carefully pry these off with a screwdriver and install new struts, bolt the hinges back on and finally the hood
Did you have a hard start or no start problem recently ? If you did you were dumping fuel into engine with no spark, which ends up sitting on top of the piston & eventually running down into the oil pan. If not, my guess is you have an injector(s) leaking down while sitting. Check your PCV is clean & working as well.
