It sounds like it could be a few different things. I would check is to do a diagnostic on the computer to see if there is a problem with any of the injectors. Then I would test the egr,map and oxygen sensor. BUT THE FIRST THING I WOULD DO IS GET A GOOD INJECTOR CLEANER TO ENSURE NONE OF YOUR VALVES ARE STICKING.

Sounds like you have one or both of the belts off by a tooth. Did u use cam locks to hold the camshafts in place. If it is a zero tolerance engine you may have messed a few things up.

Could have many causes, but a good start could be to have the
oxygen sensor voltage output checked.(In exhaust system)
This would explain why mixture/ variable idle speed occurs.

first I would like to tell you, do this procedure only if the 5th digit of your VIN is C or K.

Description

The engine control module (ECM) learns the idle position of the throttle plate to ensure the correct idle. Anytime the throttle body is cleaned or replaced, the ECM must learn the new throttle position. The idle may be unstable or a DTC may set if the throttle position is not learned.

Conditions for Running the Throttle Learn Procedure

• DTCs P0101, P0102, P0103, P0107, P0108, P0111, P0112, P0113, P0506, and P0507 are not set.

• The engine speed is between 450-4,000 RPM.

• The manifold absolute pressure (MAP) is greater than 5 kPa.

• The mass air flow (MAF) is greater than 2 g/s.

• The ignition 1 voltage is greater than 10 volts.

Throttle Learn

Important: Do NOT perform this procedure if DTCs are set. Refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code

(DTC) List - Vehicle.

1. Start and idle the engine in PARK for 3 minutes.

2. With a scan tool, monitor desired and actual RPM.

3. The ECM will start to learn the new idle cells and Desired RPM should start to decrease.

4. Ignition OFF for 60 seconds.

5. Start and idle the engine in PARK for 3 minutes.

6. After the 3 minute run time the engine should be idling normal.

Important: During the drive cycle the check engine light may come on with idle speed DTCs. If idle speed codes are set, clear codes so the ECM can continue to learn.

* If the engine idle speed has not been learned the vehicle will need to be driven at

speeds above 70 km/h (44 mph) with several decelerations and extended idles.

7. After the drive cycle, the engine should be idling normally.

* If the engine idle speed has not been learned, turn OFF the ignition for 60 seconds

and repeat step 6.
8. Once the engine speed has returned to normal, clear DTCs.

I have a 1986 GMC 1500 with a 5.0 and stock rochester carb. The truck will start but you must keep gassing it as it won't idle. It kicks off every time. Any suggestions on how to fix this cold natured


fast idle speed screw, works off the fast idle cam which the choke adjustment sets, it works together by linkages. This is the raised idle speed setting you need to keep a cold engine running. First you set the idle speed by the idle speed screw with engine at normal operating temperature. Then you set the linkage up so the cam is on a raised step, throttle will be held on that raised step. then you can turn the idle speed screw to get idle at about 1500-1800 rpm. Now when you start engine cold, choke will set the fast idle cam on that raised step- when engine starts and runs it should be running at your fast idle setting. That's how it supposed to work, you just have to get everything adjusted right. I hate carburetors, they never stay adjusted right. Considering their complexity and small mechanical parts, no wonder.

The stall problem could be a faulty idle air control valve or dirty throttle body. The computer uses the valve to adjust base idle speed depending on the load on the engine.

Sounds like possible vacuum leak. Next time it starts try spraying starting fluid around vacuum hoses, if engine speeds up, there is a vacuum leak at that point where you sprayed. Hope this helps.

After disconnecting the battery, how many hours or miles must the car be driven for the car to do self diognostics


About the only time involved is the 10 minutes to reset the computer to wipe the memory. You do have to get into the situation that caused the fault to repeat the warning. So if you had the fault at 40 MPH and you are idling and stopped, the fault may not repeat until you hit 40 MPH.

This is because some parts relate to speed, some parts relate to Temperature. Like overdrive problems start at speeds when the Overdrive is suppose to work, not at Idle. For temperature, the engine generates different amounts of heat depending on speed and other factors.

Otherwise the self-diagnosis begins when the engine starts. If you had repairs made, give it some time and operate it in the same conditions to insure it is defect free. Two or three trips on the same route ought to be enough.

2) On air conditioner equipped models, checks should be carried out while the air conditioner is OFF.

checks should be carried out while shift lever is in “N” position.
4) When measuring “CO” percentage, insert probe more than 40 cm (15.7 in) into tail pipe.
5) Turn off headlamps, heater blower, rear defogger.
6) Keep front wheels pointed straight ahead.
7) Make the check after the cooling fan has stopped.
