Hi, When was the last time your car was serviced?
It sounds like it could be either a dirty fuel filter or it could even be blocked injectors.
If you go to a car repair shop, you should ask for Red-x or a similar product, tell them what you are after is a Fuel Additive.
This product- You pour it into your fuel tank and it will clean the hole engine and all the injectors.
This is a common problem with petrol injection engines and also diesel, so using this product will benifit the engine and should solve your problem!!
Let me know how you get on and if you need further assistance just let me know as i have been a mechanic for 11 years!!

Hi, sorry its been a while but went away for few days as its bank holiday here in uk.
First is your car diesel or petrol?
What you put it the tank should clean out all the injectors if your still having the problem then it could be that the fuel filter needs replacing as this can cause the problem also.
Also does your car have a turbo?

The other problem you might be having is with the ECU this is the engine management for the car now the only way to test this would be by a garage as you need a special machine that will test this.
This could be causing your problem but if the problem has improved when you used the cleaner in the tank then it could just be that your car needs a good service and hopefully solve your problem.
Please get back to me with the questions ive asked as it helps me track the problem down for you.

Its just difficult for me as the car isnt in front of me so ill do my best to help you the best i can ok speak soon

When stopped then go to give gas acts like it wants to cut off sometimes.

Could be a combination of a number of things causing this issue. Misfiring caused by faulty plugs or wires, a vacuum leak, the injectors need cleaning, higher octane gas should be used for a period of time, at least the next 2-3 fill ups, the throttle body needs to be inspected and thoroughly cleaned etc.

Check your fuel pressure. Sometimes your fuel pump will give to much or to little fuel to the engine. Changing fuel pressure regulator will solve the problem. What is your RPM needle doing is it pulsating or going up or down...Please let me know so we can solve the problem.

My 2004 Malibu cut off driving down road and will not start back but it act like it want to start

Assuming there is gas in it, it's either a fuel issue or a electrical issue. Sometimes ignition electrical issues are heat sensitive, where it will die when hot, and then start back up when it's cold.

If it doesn't start cold, remove a spark plug and see if it is wet with gas. If it is dry, then chances are you have a fuel issue. It could be a frozen fuel line, clogged fuel filter, or a bad fuel pump.

Doing a search for "2004 malibu won't start electrical" gives me 728k hits. Searching on "2004 malibu won't start fuel", gives me 553k hits. Chances are it's electrical. Do a search on you tube for your model and year to get some more ideas of common repairs.

Looking on Edmunds it shows the car as pretty reliable except for an ignition problem with the lock cylinder.

Car Complaints also leads me to believe its electrical:

The part where you say that sometimes the car acts like it dont want to crank has me thinking your problem might be with the battery terminals. Check and make sure they are clean and tight. This would be where i would start diagnosing this problem from what you described.

SC2 car cranks and starts sometimes.put new plugs and wires and noticed oil on the 3 and 4 plug. Car once started with some starting flluid runs fine. and will restart. weather is getting cooler 20 degrees...

A common problem with the 90's engines was the ECTS (electronic coolant temperature sensor) going bad. Seems when attempting to start the car, the computer in the car will only allow enough gas it thinks is needed to start. When a car is cold, the computer gives more gas initially, until the engine warms up, then gives less gas. When starting a warm engine, less gas is needed.

If the sensor goes bad, it always tells the computer that the engine is hot. The computer give less gas to a cold engine, and sometimes it will start, sometimes not. Its a pretty cheap part, and a do it yourself one, just research it a bit on line...good luck

It's hard to figure out whats going on with out any codes. Im thinking maybe the fuel pump. To check it after it stops and doe'snt start squirt some starting fluid into the carb and see if it wants to start. If it trys to start then it's a fuel problem.
