Question about 1993 Geo Storm

Can I fit a Chevy Spectrum Transmission into a Geo Storm?

I have a 92 Geo Storm AT. The transmission is supposed to be an F3A model. The Chevy Spectrum (among others) has the same F3A model transmission. Can I put a used F3A from a 88 Chevy Spectrum in my Geo Storm? I cannot easily find a used (with any quality) Geo Storm transmission, but I can get one from a Spectrum asap. Everything I see says they are exactly the same - I just want to be sure. Additional Details - The service guide for the Spectrum and Storm are the same and discuss the transmission interchangeably. (Chiltons). Also, I have been told that the transmission is made by the same company for both cars. It just seems to make sense that an F3A is the same for any F3A application. Is the bolt pattern different on where the engine mates to the transmission then? And the rebuild kit is the same for any F3A transmission. This is just confusing. Thanks

1988 to a 1992 in the transmission world is a HUGE difference,as this is right at the time all manufacturers were changing from manual controls on transmissions to totally electronic controls....I am just guessing, but i would say NO,it won't work....Example.....1991 was the FIRST year for Ford's Taurus transmission being totally, completely, electronically controlled. So a 1990 or back won't work...and a 92 and up won't work....Gm...about the same thing....Chrysler....etc.Have yours rebuilt?

Both cars were made by Isuzu, despite what bob a says, and they seem to be the same model, just re-badged. I can't guarantee it, but it seems like if both cars had the same motor, and the model # of the trans is the same, it should work. Try to look at them side by side real carefully if you can, to check for any differences that may have been made for different model years.

1992 Geo Storm automatic wont shift past 1st and has no reverse. Tranny fluid smells normal and is normal color it should be. Fuses look fine, what could be wrong? 3 speed automatic for details

there are 2 tranny types used in this era.

real 3speed hyrdamatic, and 4 speeds with electronic TCm control box

to diagnose any tranny ,one must know what is there.

the storm is really Isuzu impulse.

the 2 choices day 1, was

  • 3-speed Jatco F3A automatic

  • 4-speed Jatco F403E automatic

so what is a F3A;

here is the guts

http://www.shinseiauto.com/japanese/transtar/atmazdaf3a04.pdf

ever change part id 26 this decade? the Filter,..... called proper service.?

as you can see it\'s a real hydramatic, no TCM brain

as such , diagnosis is old school.

stuck in 1st.

so in the FSM book , the first test

is to do the stall test. (google that)

if that fails do the transmission line pressure test. (test ports)

the stall test, will be like 1500 rpm (no i didnt look yours up)

but of like very low, the engine is weak

if the rpm goes real high that it slip. and is end of road.

ok stall passes.

the next part to fix is the governor.

this device, causes the gear change, it its dead.

the car will stick in 1st.

the GOV connects to the tail shaft.

before the GOV , i change out the Vacuum modulator #30

this mod UNIT, can leak in side and cause no up shifts.

if it vacuum nipple here, leaks ATF , the MOD is bad,

i just replace them on suspicion,.

the GOV on this car has a nice cover #4. that can come off

one car , did this, the GOV had plastic gear, and was shattered.

that is about it, on the easy fixes on car .

Where is the transmission filter located at on a 1991 geo storm

It is inside the transmission. Be sure to obtain a gasket kit along with the filter (use Permatex #2 - non-hardening gasket sealant).
Before you drop the pan, drain the transmission fluid through the metal line that goes to the bottom of the radiator.
Look for metal filings ion the pas and clean it. Don't change to any exotic transmission fluid. Transmissions don't like "change".

There is no way they would leave you stuck with the engine!! However, the odds are that it should fit. First check the flywheel or flex plate. [Not sure if its a auto or manual.] If they bolt on, your are into installing the engine! Good Luck with it! Frankster016

These can have many pages and many year-to-year and model variations.
Check Haynes and Chilton for an aftermarket service manual for your car. They are between ~$17-$30 and will earn their money back many times over and available online and at most any auto parts store.
