1982 528i BMW

My 1982 BMW 528i won't start.. it sounds like it wants to, but can't.
I have tested the coil, the battery, distributor and fuel pressure.
it has fuel and oil.
It has had problems with idling recently..... would i need to use a fuel additive?

thanks a lot! your advice was really helpful!

i think it may be the alarm system... it hasnt worked in a while, so it might be shorting out or something like that, i am going to try disabling the alarm,,, see if that fixes problem...

i hope i dont have to go to service center either! they charge so much!!

Mate, check or replace the fuel pump relay as they go bad quite often...it is the tallest one near the fuse box (7 pins) guaranteed to fix your issue. And don't replace with any that is made in Spain...use German, wherever you get it.

1 more thing you had left

is check your sparkplug & ignition system
is it ok or not ,proper wired if not than clean up that connectors & than do again with checking your battery with another same model if started than its 100% fault about your ignition sysytem coil ,

go to your service center they can solve this prob easily after all,
i hope so you dont have to go to center you ca do it yourself,as i had,

I would call that a good guess after five fuel pumps. Gosh, Jonah, paying for a little diagnostic testing would have saved you the cost of four fuel pumps.

Engine swings but does not start

Your testing so far seems to exonerate components #1 to #5, and #13.
Since you've already replaced a number of parts to address the problem, I thought I should try to be comprehensive:

Priority Action Part Type Cause
1 Inspect Ignition Switch - Improperly Connected or Faulty Ignition Switch.
2 Inspect Battery - Battery Discharged or Faulty.
3 Inspect Battery Cable - Coroded, Broken, Shorted or Poorly Connected Battery Cable.
4 Inspect Starter Solenoid - Starter Solenoid Faulty.
5 Inspect Starter Motor - Starter Motor Faulty.
6 Inspect Wireset - Worn or Damaged Spark Plug Wires.
7 Inspect Ignition Coil - Faulty Ignition Coil.
8 Inspect Distributor Cap - Loose, Cracked or Worn Distributor Cap.
9 Inspect Spark Plug - Incorrectly Gapped or Fouled Spark Plug(s).
10 Inspect Distributor Cap and Rotor Kit - Loose, Cracked or Worn Distributor Cap, or burned rotor contacts.
11 Inspect Fuel Tank - Fuel Tank Empty.
12 Inspect Carburetor - Worn, Faulty or Damaged Carburetor.
13 Inspect Fuel Pump - Faulty Fuel Pump.
14 Inspect Fuel Pump Strainer - Fuel Pump Strainer Clogged.
15 Inspect Fuel Filter - Fuel Filter Clogged.
16 Inspect Air Filter - Air Filter Clogged.
17 Inspect Fuel Injectors - Fuel Injectors Clogged/Inoperative
18 Inspect/Test PCM - Powertrain Control Module (Computer) defective - sending incorrect ignition/timing signals to fuel injectors
19 Inspect Fuel Rail - Fuel Rail leaking/broken causing inadequate/low fuel pressure.

Use a HEI (High Energy Ignition) tester to see if you have spark to your sprak plugs - if not, suspect Ignition Coil, Distributor Cap, or Distributor Rotor.

The national auto parts chains (AutoZone, Pep Boys, and Advance Auto Parts) will hook up a
diagnostic tool to your car to perform a Charging System diagnosis for free - its an easy
way to exonerate & differentially diagnose your Alternator/Battery/Voltage Regulator.

Priority Action Part Type Cause
1 Inspect Battery Battery Discharged or Faulty.
2 Inspect Battery Cable Corroded, Broken, Shorted or Poorly Connected Battery Cable.
3 Inspect Fuel Filter Clogged or Dirty Fuel Filter.
4 Inspect Distributor Cap Distributor Cap Cracked or Burned contacts.
5 Inspect Coil - Ignition Faulty Ignition Coil.
6 Inspect Wireset Worn, Damaged or Faulty Spark Plug Wire(s).
7 Inspect Spark Plug Incorrectly Gapped or Fouled Spark Plug(s).
8 Inspect Starter Starter Motor Faulty.
9 Inspect Fuel Pump Low Fuel Pressure.
10 Inspect Solenoid Switch Faulty Starter Solenoid Switch.
11 Inspect Relay - Fuel Pump Faulty Fuel Pump Relay.
12 Inspect Fuel Injector Pressure Regulator Faulty Fuel Injector Pressure Regulator.
13 Inspect Ignition Switch Improperly Connected or Faulty Ignition Switch.
14 Inspect Starter Motor Faulty Starter Motor.
15 Inspect Fuel Injector Dirty or Worn Fuel Injectors.
16 Inspect Fuel Pump Strainer Clogged or Dirty Fuel Pump Strainerat.
17 Inspect Engine Control Computer Incorrect Operating Information Being Delivered and Sent From The ECC.

Truck wont crank. we have put new distributor cap, rotor button, coil pack, plugs, wires, and fuel pump. we also checked our firing order.

you said you repl dist cap that means you don't have a crank sensor you have electronic ing module. remove your elec ing module have it tested most auto parts stores could test your module, or check your coil at the neg terminal. should have power. if not you lost your primary volt from your batt.your secondary power is coming from your electronic ing module from the module to the pos terminal on the coil, when the eng cranks, from the coil to the dist cap , from the dist cap center to the rotor then out to the plugs, this all happen pervided the timing belt or timing chain is ok. the cumbustion chainber needs 3 things , thats fuel, air, and spark.

My son has a 1984 528E BMW Sedan. He last started it in May, was away until July. In July the car would not start. We have discovered ONLY ONE distributor wire point is sending Spark (Front to Back of...

How did you tell it was only sending spark to # 3 cylinder. Could be bad plug wires or very badly fouled plugs if indeed electrical, or could be an issue with the injectors or fuel system. If not sure. One quick way to test is get an inductive timing light to see if you have a spark pulse on each wire. Please give me more infor and I'll see how to help.

1997 jeep grand cheerkee tunes over but won,t start no fire from coil to distributor

So you have B+ to coil but no B+ from coil to distributor. Sounds like the ignition module.
Its not triggering coil to fire . Double check it with a test light at negative side of coil and then to ground.crank the vehicle if light flickers its ok if not its your culprit.
Should light flicker then test its the wires from coil to distributor, distributor , rotor and plug wires.
Honestly if the light flickers your not losing anything by replaceing the items from the coil tower to the plugs.
