MAFS = Mass Air Flow Sensor

It has 4 or 5 wire plug connector and bolts to the air box

You must only use IPA (isopropyl alcohol)

Ford focus 1800 deisel is missing when revs get to 3000 could it be a fuel problem

Has it always done this? A gasoline engine `rev-limiter' on a lot of Fords kicks out at 4000, so with a diesel, I would think 3000 might be a pre-set limit? don-ohio

On my 1998 ford focus, the revs seem pretty low when it ticks over. under braking the revs drop even lower, sometimes to the point where it cuts out. Any ideas ?

You have described a concern where as the idle air control valve has fialed or there is a vacuum leak in the PCV hose causing a lean condition.

Loss of acceleration

Before you end up with a huge repair bill I would strongly advise you to have the fault codes read by a main VW dealer. A faulty EGR valve will show up immediately in this case or the diagnoses will quickly point elsewhere.

Main dealers have the proper software for reading faults stored in the cars computer and it is not that expensive to have this done. Most will do it for around £40 - check with them beforehand of course! Small independents usually have a generic fault reader which is generally quite unreliable at diagnosing this type of fault.

In this particular case the best case scenario is a faulty EGR valve. Worst case scenario is that either the injector pump or turbo is faulty. These can all cause the symptoms you describe. Get the fault read then take the car back to the local garage to have the work done and so save on labour rates.

Temp gauge goes into RED at 3000 revs and/or under load/acceler..

sounds more like a weak spring in the thermostat....not keeping the thermostat open fully under high water flow (like in higher rpms)

Engine missing, car jerking and juddering

you might have a bad plug wire it doesn't have to be loose you could have a hole or cut in the wire and it's not getting a good spark to the cylinder. the radio interferance tells me this might really be the problem

Ive got a focus st170 and about 4000 revs it seems to missfire

If you mean in neural it misses this is normal. It has a rev limiter to save the engine. You are bouncing it off the chip at 4000 rpm.
