I am trying to locate where the voltage stabliser is on my friends 1997 xj6 3.4l Jaguar can anybody tell me where it is ?

It is part of the alternator it is called a regulator. This regulate the voltage that charges the battery. If that regulator goes bad, you end up with overcharging which is dangerous and can blow up the battery, or you end up with a car that has a short and not charging.

I have a 1983 Jag XJ6. When operating, the

that is exactly what happened the alternator went bad causing overload in the battery, replacing it with a rebuilt will be fine,as long as the replacement puts out the same amps. it will most likely have a warranty of some kind so i would not replace it until car is back on the road . you don't want warranty expiring while car is parked.

The gas gage on my 1985 jaguar xj6 is working and

It sounds like a change over valve is faulty. U have 2 check over valves 1 on each side of rear wheel wells. Also a change over valve that switches 1 tank to other. I recomend replacing all 3 valves for peace of mind, because when 1 goes the others follow. Hope this is helpful!

Charging issue

You need to get yourself a cheap digital voltmeter so that you can check charging voltage. It should be close to 14 volts. Also a repair manual, does the car have an external voltage regulator? If so, change it and check again. Check that the belt is tight! If you have a new alternator and regulator and no charging, it's likely a wiring problem or blown fuse. Scour the wiring diagram and your fuse box(es) for a "charging" fuse.
