Trans needs to be looked at and diagnosed by a trans. shop, sounds like a clutch or band problem, but could also be a shift sensor or BCM acting out, see AAMCO Transmissions or the like for a free analogy.

thanks so much i have had the since 2003 never had a problem hoping and praying its not the transmission the shop said it would make it worse to have it serviced

That can be a problem....sometimes when you drain the fluid and add new fluid to it the problem gets worse... sometimes it stays the same and sometimes it gets better...from what you are explaining, I tend to believe that if the fluid and or the filter?screen is plugged up the trans would have a hard time going into drive or reverse but you say it goes in hard...meaning that it is an abrupt shift...real noticable...fluid probs usually go like this...you put it in reverse or drive...wait a while ...then it goes into gear...even if this were the case a trans. fluid and filter/screen change could make it worse it is a gamble..how many miles are on it and have you changed the fluid every 30,000 miles??? if not and it is high miles you could have a major problem doing so now...even if you dont do anything... this unit can let go, so I would perpare for something to be done... either a replaced trans/repaired trans..another car...something... and put the money away right away in preparation for it.
    Good Luck!!!

What would cause a 2003 Chevy Malibu with an automatic transmission to go in gear but not move in any?

The speedometer is ran off a sensor in the trans. First thing is check the fluid . There should be a dip located on top of the trans. It might be way down in there. Should be colored red or yellow. Start the vehicle then check the dipstick, if low add fluid. Low fluid could cause it to slip and and not engage. If it's full , note the color of the fluid. Red is good, brown, not so good and black is bad. I'm talking about the color of the fluid, how many miles? Also did any particular gear go out first? Most trans . Failures begin with loss of reverse first. Not always but that could be a good indication. If fluid black and burnt trans,. Is shot. Smell the fluid to detect a burnt smell. Hopefully it was just low. But given the sparse info its hard to say. If full and red or brown also most likely an internal prob.

Why will automatic trans. not go into gear?

Check the transmission fluid level. There is a dipstick ( typically a yellow or red handle) at the back of the motor - I think it may be on the driver side of the motor. Start the motor and check the fluid. DO NOT TRY TO DRIVE THE TRUCK!! low fluid can burn up the transmission. the dipstick will have the exact fluid type needed imprinted on it. add fluid with motor off, 1 quart at a time, and start the truck and let it run for a few minutes while you shift from park, reverse, neutral, and drive, back to park for 30 seconds per position before checking again until the level is between the add and full marks on the stick.

My 1998 chevy metro will not go into drive or reverse, its a automatic trans,it fires up no problem, when put into drive nothing happens same for reverse?

The transmission is either very low on fluid, or is burnt up. I would start by checking the transmission fluid.
If this helps you please rate by checking the 4 thumbs up! Thanks for using Fixya.com

Clutch would not go to drive,..I press the gas pedal but still car goes in reverse as if the clutch did not engage in drive at all...After full pressure on gas the vehicle jumps forward with a leap.

Check the fluid. Clutches don't go into drive, transmissions do. They also won't shift if the fluid is low. Fill the trans with fluid and take it to a Firestone dealer for a trans service. They are having a sale on transmission oil and filter changes till Dec 31st.

I have a 2003 lincoln ls with 110,000 miles and there is a hard **** when it is about to go into 3rd gear; there is also a hard **** when I put in reverse. I am told that I need a solenoid assembly...

You need a new Trans Control Solenoid--one unit with all 3 pressure control and 4 shift solenoids, in one unit.
Remove trans pan, gasket reusable, remove filter, remove 7 torx screws and one 10mm wire harness connector bolt, then pull down old solenoid pack.

Part # 9L2Z7G391A 515.30 list/332.20 cost at trans supply house

Do Not Go to a Dealer, unless your Warren Buffet or Bill Gates

Change the fluid a couple more times, after installing the new solenoid pack, and driving a couple weeks with no issues. Add a bottle of Red Lubgard, to your Mercon V Trans Fluid, at the last fluid change

Also--pull injector fuses, crank over engine, and flush Power Steering Fluid. (Dex/Merc Fluid)

There is a hose hanging and it seems to be leaking transmission fluid. Now it will not go in reverse. Is my transmission savable?

Look under the car and see where the hose came from and re-attach it. There are three lines there. Two are cooler lines (attach to the side of the case and run to the radiator), one is a vent line (and should not leak fluid) Check the transmission level and add whatever is necessary to bring the level back to full. While adding fluid, keep checking underneath to make sure what you are adding is not going on the ground. If the transmission is full when you first check it then you need a transmission shop to run a diagnostics test to determine the cause of the malfunction. If the trans fluid is very low and filling it gets reverse back then change the fluid and add a quart of lucas trans conditioner and it may help. But....if it was driven low for a considerable amount of time it will need a rebuild.

Possible tranmission slippage??

yes this is a defective trans, u either have a worn out direct clutch or a hydraulic leak inside the trans, u can try changing the fluid and filter it may help, if not you will need to replace the trans.
