If your vehicle has done a high mileage then it is time that the oil rings are worn out. If on the other hand there was a poor maintenance schedule , like changing of engine oil within a correct mileage, then you engine can be damaged.
the oil comes over to the combustion chamber to burn off , in such case you will get smoke in the exhaust.
If there is oil dripping due to any damage the oil levels can drop.
finally an oil seal along the drive shafts, the transmission side can also reduce oil.
so check this out.

Can i use Penrite 10w-40 semi synthetic oil in my 2002 Honda CRV for one oil change only plus filter change? car has done 248k's with no oil use

You could do that. It is a thicker oil and heavier weight, not usually recommended in the winter time cause it makes it harder to start the car. Your car has high miles thus more wear, I usually use 10w-40 in place of high-mileage oils (cause it has less detergents) unless the car has been using full synthetic oil from the start. I'd say ok, and if it runs sluggish then you can use something like Marvel Oil to thin it down and that will help clean and lubricate your engine too.

2002 KIA SPECTRA USING EXCEESSIVE AMOUNT OF OIL. WHITE SMOKE FROM EXHAUST.POOR ENGINE PERFORMANCE

A sign that you need new rings since excessive loss of oil and white smoke means oil is going to the combution chamber of the engine and bad rings are letting that happen. take it to a technician to make sure you get it right. Thank you for visiting Fixya.

Our 2002 Honda CRV has 154,300 plus miles. In the past year, we have had excessive repairs (new brakes-$1100, new starter, $800 plus, 150,000 maintenance last week-$535). Now, we need a new oxygen sensor...

On one hand, it is coming up to 10 years old, and nowadays, that is pretty good for this car........as this is not a little hatch, but a kind of workhorse........

But then, it's all a matter of the budget.....yours that is.....

I would suggest buying a new car, but then again, you know the vehciel history of this one......so it really is a matter of personal choice....!!!!

I have a 1997 honda crv that crank slow in cold weather.

Slower cranking in cold weather is normal due to the oil being thicker and other tolerances being tighter. As long as the engine fires within 3-5 seconds I wouldn't worry about it. If it cranks REAL slow or is excessively slow to start, I'd tune it up (plugs, wires, distributor cap, etc.) and change the oil to the lowest viscosity recommended. Also, I'd have the battery tested and replaced if it shows marginal.

No spark and no rpms showing on tach while cranking over?

when ignition switch is placed on "on", are several lights not lit on the instrument panel. Such as check engine, abs, battery, oil..etc!! All warning lights are to be lit momentarily when the ignition is placed in "on" position. This vehicle may be part of a recall in 2002, which replaces faulty ignition switches. Poor design of internal contacts and excessive power consumption leads to power failure to vital engine components. Typical symtoms include: intermitted stalling, no spark, hard starts. Inspect the ignition switch for dark residue, and replace if necessary!!
