Question about Jeep CJ5

2 Answers

I cant put my shifter in gear unless the jeep is off and once I try to shift gears as I push the clutch in it makes a terrible noise and will not go in gear. I adjusted the linkage but I dont think it is all correct from the pedal to the fork it self. Is there a parts list and a diagrham I can go by to make sure everything is correct and in place

You must have an old jeep if you have linkage at all...newer ones have a hydraulic clutch. But, if you have linkage, just keep lengthening the rod till the clutch disengages when you step down on the pedal. If it will not work then something is wrong with the clutch itself (bad throwout bearing etc) and it will need to come apart to find the problem.

I am looking for recommendations for someone in Chicago who is expert with the '84 Jeep CJs. I have an '84 CJ7 and the linkage seems to be shot, making it very difficult to shift into gear. Once it gets...

not true, at all , any ASE mech can do this.... sorry, its a fact.
the linkage (A/T or M/T , 4wd lever or main gear shift lever>???)
try hard to say , exact what part is bad.
A/T box
4WD, issues, ( on my 5th jeep, and have 2 now) Can fix any car.

if i was there, id have you, show me what to do , to get the failed
symptoms. you;d say, sit here, and grab , this? what is this.
the manual stick shift, and id , push in the clutch.
and id see , the clutch works but the shifter parts (bushings) are shot
and the lever flops about,,,, so i pull it down and rebush it with factory parts.
or ,if an A/T id sit there, and put it in Drive, the car dont move
i then try all other gears, L 2, R , do they fail too???
i make sure the linkage shifts correct at the actual tranny.
if not the linkage is bad (loose) or needs adjustment , (FSM covers ways and spec)
like that.
no mech needs to know jeeps. not at all, there is nothing magic here.
"like French cars"
you only need to know 4wd cars. both A./T and M/T

do post back with car spec. with options. we dont know. that.
cant see it.
if your car is not stock, then sure , any mech, will have trouble.
frankejeeps or fanken cars of any kind, are a big problem.
there is no limits to the frank (hacks) is why,
done many,
many shops will look and see all the hacks and not even touch it
for good reasons (many, ask)

Clutch cable geo tracker

don't want to shift? fills a huge basket ,
1: grinds?
2: can't get in to some gears.? or all gears.? (engine running and not)?
3: clutch drags, clutch slips kills all gears, or just 5th.
drag kills them all and reverse 1st , its the canary gear. !! non synchro
4: noise.? or chatter, ****,larchig, or throwout hash ,?

here is the clutch page, link below.

the #1 failure for a gear not Selecting is a $5 fix.
the tip of the shifter shaft, plastic POS is broken, bar none this failure,#1 and sold only at SUZ, get em' while you can they are chapter 11 ANDGM/GEO is brain dead , ask them , and you get blank stares.

this can be proven, by selecting the gears by hand. running.
if failure, cant move those fork rods?
running? only
if you cant, the clutch is dragging. see why?
works stalled means the clutch drags.
can you shift to 1st stalled, start engine drive off can you get any gear? yes,if yes , constantly? with no grinding, the clutch is ok.

to do that manual shifter off test test the shifter must be removed.

the we get to the cable.
see the 1inch rule here, no guessing.
play set to spec, and you floor the pedal , person 2 sees 1 inch travel, (END new cable worry)
if it moves 1inch and the tranny can not be SELECTED.
the clutch is bad, if you can select only stalled motor.
if selection fails all time, stalled and running, the tranny is siezed.
covers every fail logged by 1000s of users

Some of that model had an unusual clutch mechanism, which has probably broken due to wear. Read here

In the event yours is instead fitted with a hydraulic clutch, either

- the hose has split
- the clutch throwout lever has broken or collapsed

Having trouble getting button on side of gear shift pushed in to put vehicle put in gear. sometimes takes like 5 minutes to get released stared all at once

try and push the gear shifter forward like you are forcing it into park. while holding pressure on it try pushing the button in, and make sure your foot is on the brake pedal. Some cars have a safety feature that requires the brakes to be depressed before you can shift into drive.

1999 honda prelude manual transmission isn't disengaging all the way when i shift, sometimes locking the shifter in gear or not allowing me to up or down shift. I know my master and slave cylinders need to...

This depends as dose it do it when cold or hot.
2nd when you push in pedal and put in gear dose it go in clean or hard to select 3rd can you hear a grinding noise when pushing in pedal and noise goes
when you take you foot off the clutch pedal IF so then its the thrust bearing on clutch REPLACE ALL .4th if you push in clutch pedal and select a gear and let the clutch out if drive right out (replace)

Try to check the trans mission gears of your 1995 jeep grand cherokee. The shift fork and the clutch sleeve of the trans mission is locking to the other gears .And then also check the starter motor and its solenoid.if the starter motor solenoid is destroyed or worn out replace .

Clicking noise from clutch when I push down to shift gears

there is a switch on the clutch linkage. you can see it if you look under the pedol it looks like a black cylinder that slides along the clutch shaft. when this breaks you can't start you Jeep.
Mine broke I had to wait 2 weeks for a replacement part.
oh yeah( it clicks when you press the clutch) so you know it is broken.
