Can't remove key

I can't get the key out of the ignition of my 2007 Chevy Cobalt. (This happened before, though it was supposed to have been fixed.) Previously, I could push a button and remove the key, but this time that is not working.

What would you suggest???

I have the same problem. Understand that there is a problem with the automatic shift selection "not recognizing" when the car is in park, so the key will not allow you to move into the lock position and remove the key. Funny that Chevy even has an access panel under the steering wheel which you can manually trip a reset button. Seems like a design flaw.

We cannot get the keys out of the ignition. We have only had it for a week now, used of course, but did not ever expect this kind of problem. Looks like we are back to the dealer tomorrow. We tried driving it around and shifting the gears but nothing seems to work.

I remove teh cup holder and reach under to the right and trip a switch that releases the key. I have yet to come up with a long term solution other than the $250 the dealer offered. This will be the last cobaly I own. Back to Dodge for me.

We have the same problem. Sometimes the key comes out, but other times it sticks, and we have to lock the doors with the key in the ignition and use the spare key to get back into the car.

i dont have the answer, but you can remove an access plate under the steering colum. In there there is a white button. hold it in, turn the key and pull it out. its in the owners manual if your not sure on my instruction.

I have not had this issue on my Cobalt, but I did encounter it on my 1997 Chevy Blazer.

There is a shift lock interchange that doesn't allow the car to shift unless the brake pedal is pressed in, and won't allow the ignition to be turned fully off if the car is not in park.

To remove my key I used to shift from Park to Drive repeatedly attempting to get the switch to lock in place. While it was very annoying, it eventually worked and the key was able to come out.

Thank you very much for the tip on the switch. We just arrived from a trip from LA to Salt Lake City and my daughter went to her house and had to drive all the way back because she could not remove her key from her Cobalt 2006 (the pest). I told her of what I read just now and she did find the blessed switch!!!! Yess!!! She could not be happier and her cat will be even happier! Thank you a million!!!!!

My daughter encountered this problem right now as we arrived from a trip from LA to SLC. She went to her house and had to return to ours because she could not remove the key from her Cobalt 2006. Thanks to this solution she was able to find the switch, remove the key, and go back to her place where her cat waited so desperately for her return. Thanks a million! I love this website!

Don't pay for a pricey fix. I had the same thing happen to me in the parking lot of Wal-Mart one night and almost lost my mind figuring it out but finally did. Take off the small rubber grommet on the bottom of the steering column. With your right index finger put it up there and feel for a button on the left side. If you have ever driven an old Ford they all have a switch to remove your key. This button works in the same way. The problem isn't with your transmission selector switch. Dealers like to make money! I loke to save you money! Hope this works! It did for me!

I've had this problem after turning my car off. The problem I've found is with the steering column. If I turn the steering wheel so that it locks and then turn it ever so slightly so that it's not resting on either side I can pull the key out.

My 2006 Chevy Cobalt developed this problem this past weekend. What a hassle! I took it to the dealer this morning and he told me it would be $250 to replace either ignition or gear shift. Whatever! I don't have the money for this. I will try some of the suggestions you posted to see if it helps.

I had problems with that also. i found that when i shift it to park and i push it really hard into park, it will "register" and the key will come out no problem.

I couldnt get my keys out of my Cobalt and I have one key. Big problem. Anyway, the dude who talks about the button is dead on. It's really more of a lever than a button, but it worked! Thanks dude, now I don't have to unhook my battery. Chevy SUUUUUUUXX!

check for fuel pressure or listen for fuel pump operation in fuel tank when you turn ignition switch to on position for ten seconds. if no could have faulty fuel pump fuse or relay pump could have failed.if yes hear fuel pump running could have plugged fuel filter. if fuel system okay problem could be ignition system.have vechicle code scan look for fault codes.could have faulty ignition module faulty camshaft sensor or crankshaft position sensor.faulty PCM.

Can not turn 09 chevy cobalt off. Key will not turn to the left. Also difficult to remove key.

Do you have alot of weight hanging on your key chain? Your ignition tumblers are worn out. Replace the tumblers and it should fix it.

The key in my 2007 Chevy Cobalt broke off in the ignition. I need to replace the ignition but was told the key had a chip in it and the car would have to be reprogrammed to replace the ignition is this...

yes. I would use the dealer or a shop that knows your GM car and has the tools to do the job. A locksmith may be able to remove the key, that way you may not need to replace everything.

Key won't turn in 2008 Chevy Cobalt. Tried moving

now what it sounds like is the key has a sensor built in it the keys cost around 60.00$ but this is most likely what is wrong. the sensor is a security feature with the car if the light glows while trying to turn the car then this your problem :)

We cannot get the key out of the ignition and it is stuck on acc. and has run the battery down. What in the world is going on?

The battery needs a full charged to have the ignition keys pulled out. The other thing to that can cause the Ignition keys not to release.

In the Cobalt the problem is that there is a small bar in the shifter that is supposed to hit a micro switch and that bar can came out of place.
It will not hitting that micro switch to allow the ignition to release the key when the car is in park.
What to do is tear the center council apart and pull the whole shift mechanism out and reposition the bar and put it all back together. Yes it's a pain and time consuming
Good luck and hope this helps, and be careful not to damage the ignition lock, you could damage the wires in the ignition lock for the anti theft.
