Question about 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt Coupe
I can't get the key out of the ignition of my 2007 Chevy Cobalt. (This happened before, though it was supposed to have been fixed.) Previously, I could push a button and remove the key, but this time that is not working.
What would you suggest???
I have not had this issue on my Cobalt, but I did encounter it on my 1997 Chevy Blazer.
There is a shift lock interchange that doesn't allow the car to shift unless the brake pedal is pressed in, and won't allow the ignition to be turned fully off if the car is not in park.
To remove my key I used to shift from Park to Drive repeatedly attempting to get the switch to lock in place. While it was very annoying, it eventually worked and the key was able to come out.

Thank you very much for the tip on the switch. We just arrived from a trip from LA to Salt Lake City and my daughter went to her house and had to drive all the way back because she could not remove her key from her Cobalt 2006 (the pest). I told her of what I read just now and she did find the blessed switch!!!! Yess!!! She could not be happier and her cat will be even happier! Thank you a million!!!!!

Don't pay for a pricey fix. I had the same thing happen to me in the parking lot of Wal-Mart one night and almost lost my mind figuring it out but finally did. Take off the small rubber grommet on the bottom of the steering column. With your right index finger put it up there and feel for a button on the left side. If you have ever driven an old Ford they all have a switch to remove your key. This button works in the same way. The problem isn't with your transmission selector switch. Dealers like to make money! I loke to save you money! Hope this works! It did for me!

I've had this problem after turning my car off. The problem I've found is with the steering column. If I turn the steering wheel so that it locks and then turn it ever so slightly so that it's not resting on either side I can pull the key out.

My 2006 Chevy Cobalt developed this problem this past weekend. What a hassle! I took it to the dealer this morning and he told me it would be $250 to replace either ignition or gear shift. Whatever! I don't have the money for this. I will try some of the suggestions you posted to see if it helps.

I had problems with that also. i found that when i shift it to park and i push it really hard into park, it will "register" and the key will come out no problem.

I couldnt get my keys out of my Cobalt and I have one key. Big problem. Anyway, the dude who talks about the button is dead on. It's really more of a lever than a button, but it worked! Thanks dude, now I don't have to unhook my battery. Chevy SUUUUUUUXX!
