Check your serpentine belt. If ok then check engine coolant if that is ok take off radiator cap start engine and watch to see if the coolant in the radiator starts to circulate when engine reaches operating temp. If it don't change engine thermostat if all fails to get coolant moving then you will have to change the water pump.

Smoke from engine and clugging noise then cuts off

I would trust the smoke and noise from the engine rather than a faulty temp gauge. have you checked the coolant level in the radiator and not the reservoir. The temp gauge will not give you any indication of overheating if there is no coolant to make it work

My Corsica stalls when about to stop.

Samething happend on my 94. The dealer told me ther was a service bulliton. Never went to print Mechanic just have common knowledge of this problem. It is the CPU it may need resetting by the dealer they have he proper equipment to reflash it. If is faulty it can cause all kinds of weird stuff. From making your engine light go on or off to slow turn signals to making your engine stop at idle. But high engine temp is the most common due to the CPU. Have it checked out by the dealer . Don't spend your money on alot of bogus fixes. I am having it done again the CPU just does not hold the programing. I will never buy another Chev without reading there Service Bulletions first.

My 94 Corsica will not start in park but will in neutral. Would you know the cause. Thank you.

Neutral saftey switch or Prndl switch could be at fault...both are located on the transmission.

1996 chevy corsica 2.2 liter engine. Coolant temp never reaches above one-quarter hot, therefore no heat. I've put in four thermostats, installed new radiator, disconnected the cooling fan, still no heat....

You may have a stopped-up heater core. It's a little radiator inside your dash; it's where the heat comes from. I don't understand why the temp gauge isn't reading any higher than that...
