Check transfer case lube by pulling rubber plug. It should be just below this seal.

1979 cj7 jeep renegade only my front tires spin and the back ones will start to but then they quit? It has a hydro vac system in the glove box but that does not help ?

ok this car has part time 4wd
and my guess you dont have option, called EL ESS DEE
limited slip differential , using the abbreviation here is profane post failure.(silly they are) L*S*D

4wd engaged, both prop shafts under power.
so with out EL ESS DEE.
the tire that is has the least traction spins, (called open axles)
with EL ESS Dee option all 4 wheels spin in 4wd, no matter what.
all 4 get Torque.
but slip in turns a bit.
so if no EL ESS DEE.
what to do, easy ,do as my new jeep does, 2007+ JK
drag your foot brake lightly, this magic trick forces all 4 tires
to have torque,
my 08JK uses ABS to do that magic. all automatically.

this is how part time 4wd works
the transfer case has no center differential.
so you must not drive on dry pavement, only ice and off road.
or get damage.

generally manual boxes have a square plug on top that you can remove and fill through, use a good grade of gear oil.

1979 ford f-250 four wheel drive won't engage

I take it the transfer case shifter feels okay (shifts through all four gear positions), so try jack up one side of front end, rotate wheel while looking in knuckle to see if drive axle turns, if it does, then hubs engaged. Now if someone holds the front d shaft, and wheel won't turn, then both hubs are engaged. Next put t case in 4xhi or 4xlow, if you cant turn the wheel, then the t case is engaged, and all is normal. If wheel still turns at this point, then the t case is not engaged for some reason, but post again if it does. Hope this helps.
