Question about 1998 Chrysler Sebring

Open Question

Have a 1998 Chrysler Sebring Convertible. Tachometer doesn't work. Ran Self-Diagnostic and all of instrument cluster panel works except for tachometer. Does entire instrument cluster panel need to be replaced or just the gauge? Can I replace it myself (with a Chilton manual's assistance) or do I have to take it to a dealership/qualified service center?

SOURCE: instrument cluster bulb is out. how do i replace

It may not be a bulb, as the instrument cluster usually has a number of bulbs and they probably didn't all blow at once. Pulling instrument clusters can be touchy and may not be for the average "shadetree mechanic" however, typically there are a few screws above the cluster going into the dash pad and a few hidden behind the trim panels below the cluster.

If you need a manual, you need a factory manual. Aftermarket manuals seldom address the convertible top.
Convertible tops seldom leak till they are 5-6 yrars old unless the material is defective.
Your problem is probably weatherstrips.
Either they are damaged or out of place.
Door window adjustment will also cause a leak at the weatherstrip.
If the water is in the rear of the car, you probably have plugged drains.
Convertibles leak at the rear from new. there is a gutter that directs the water to drain holes near the rear wheels. If the drains get plugged, the water will seep into the rear carpet or trunk.
Solution...clear the drains.

This is a common problem with the voyager, caravans and Town & Countrys. What the problem is is a cold soder in the interment cluster itself. The problem area is where the plug comes from the van into the cluster. You need to take the circuit board out of the cluster and reheat the soder on the back side of the circuit board were the plug plugs into. This will fix the cold soder permanitly I think its about 16 pins you have to reheat with the soder gun. If you don't feel comfrotable doing that you can just replace the interment cluster and it will be fine but if you buy a used one make sure it was tested. Good luck

The speedometer is operated differently then the tachometer. Tachometer
The tachometer displays the engine speed in revolutions per minute (RPM). Voltage pulses are taken from the ignition control module (ICM) (Gasoline) or the generator (Diesel) and sent to the tachometer. Solid state circuits convert the pulse frequency in order to move the pointer of the tachometer.

After disconnect and reconnect the battery of my opel antara, the indication of odometer displays only 888... for all indications. How can i reset it?

This solution will be of great help to you,even in the case of future or other dashboard problems;
Instrument cluster consists of electronic analog gauges, various warning lights, and optional tachometer. Vehicles equipped with tachometer have an electronic vacuum fluorescent transmission range indicator (PRND3L),odometer and trip odometer display. Vehicles without tachometer are equipped with a cable-operated transmission range indicator.
Instrument cluster is equipped with the following warning lights:
Battery voltage.
Cruise (speed control).
Door ajar.
Fasten seat belt.
Lift gate ajar.
Low fuel level.
Low windshield and washer level.
Traction Control.
The Body Control Module (BCM), which receives input from various sensors, sends display information to instrument cluster and operates gauges. Instrument cluster incorporates a self-test diagnostic feature to identify electronic problems. BCM, Powertrain Control Module (PCM), and Transmission Control Module (TCM) are continuously monitored by the diagnostic system.

SELF-DIAGNOSTICS
With ignition off, press and hold TRIP and RESET buttons while turning ignition switch to ON position. Continue to hold TRIP and RESET buttons until odometer window displays CODE (approximately 5 seconds). If problem exists, system will display diagnostic trouble codes. See DIAGNOSTIC CODE CHART table. If no problem exists, Code 999 (end test) will be displayed.
DIAGNOSTIC CODE CHART
CodeDescription
110.......Cluster Memory Fault
111.......Cluster Calibration Fault
905.......No CCD Bus Message From TCM
921.......Odometer Fault From BCM
940.......No CCD Bus Message From PCM

After diagnostic code display ends, instrument cluster will go into each of the following tests in order:
Dim test.
Calibration test.
Odometer segment test.
Electronic Transmission Range indicator segment test.
Dim Test
CHEC-0 will be displayed in odometer window. Instrument cluster will dim Vacuum Florescent (VF) display. If VF displays do not dim, a problem in instrument cluster exists. See BODY CONTROL COMPUTER TESTS in BODY CONTROL COMPUTER article.
Calibration Test
CHEC-1 will be displayed in odometer window. Each of instrument cluster gauges will move sequentially through each calibration point. See GAUGE CALIBRATIONS table. If gauge needle is not calibrated properly, a problem in instrument cluster exists.

Odometer Segment Test
CHEC-2 will be displayed in odometer window. Each segment of odometer will light sequentially. If any segment does not light, replace instrument cluster.
Electronic Transmission Range Indicator Segment Test
CHEC-3 will be displayed in odometer window. Each segment of electronic transmission range indicator will light sequentially. If any segment does not light, replace instrument cluster.

I have a 2004 sebring that i bought new. the instrument cluster lights dont work, i checked interior fuses number 7 and 11 that relate to the instrument cluster illumination. they seem to be fine.

If the fuses are good there should be a dial that adjusts the brightness of the dash panel. If this dial doesn't work then the bulbs for the dash panel might be blown out.

I also had the instrument panel go out yesterday on our 2008 Sebring LX. I wish someone could give clear answers to the problem without bringing it down to the dealership. $$$

It sounds like you may have a bad ground to the instrument panel. Check any "black wire" connections to the instrument panel and trace them to where they are connected to the body of the car. If you have recently had work done to the car that required removal of potential ground points (such as an alarm install, car stereo, etc) pay particular attention to those areas.
