If you have a viscous fan hub for the fan then replace the hub. If you have electric fans check that there is cirrent getting to the fans when the engine is hot. Check for fan temp sensor , rlay etc
the most common problems with the aj26/27 engine cooling system problems 1 thermostat 2 waterpump 3 blocked radiator the cooling temp indicator on the dash defaults to norm unless ther is a serious overheat perhaps its ok as it is if no one has changed any hoses and put in the wrong way then check 1 first then 2 then 3 is the cooling fan coming in al lthe time?thermostat is favorite
Check out clarks-garage.com he has a complete troubleshooting guide for your cooling system along with a schematic. In short, check the low speed resistor on the firewall. Should be around one ohm.
Their is a sensor screwed into the radiator which sends a signal to the fan relay when the radiator gets hot and activates the fan. If you changed the relay then this is most likely the problem. But it may be the fan. To check remove the plug from the fan and when radiator get's hot check if power is comming through the wire's.
replace coolant sensor connector?if so can u get a thermo lazer gun to check the block temp? this will tell u if the gauge is incorect,,,go ahead a bleed all the air out of cooling system and see if that does the trick
if the coolant fans do not work the pressures will be to high and the condenser will not cool which it needs .start with the fans they are very important
Cooling Fan Temp Sensor is the First thing You Check (with what you have described) Cooling Fan Should ALways come On When The A/C is turned On as A/C Adds A Load to Engine, If Temp Sensor is Faulty it Will Not Give GROUND Signal to ECM >For COOLING FAN >RELAY to Give ground and turn ON The Fan.
There ARE 2 temp Sensors that Serve Different Purposes 1 is for Dash READING GAGE & Or TEMP LIGHT the Other is For ECM or Fan Relay (SAME Thing) you Said>""can disconnect the sensor and fan continues to run" < This Leads me to think you Changed the Wrong One. Not Questioning your Skills Just Here to Help.
TEMP SENSOR FOR 3.1L V6 is Located upper RH rear of engine compartment, near exhaust system. Temp SENSOR for 2.3L Engine is Located in LH rear of engine compartment. I Hope this Helps Lead you to a NON-OVERHEATING Pontiac.
