If the battery light is on, your charging system is not working. This may have also caused the brake light to come one. Recommend you replace the alternator and see if that doesn't extinguish both lights. If not, please get back to me.

to my knowledge the voltage with the car on should be at 14 and even with everything on a 13.5? I tested it with a batery tester and running it only showed like a 12.5. The car will start for like 3 seconds and then spudder out. and the battery has completely drained once. im pretty sure its the alternator.... is there a possibility of maybee a bad belt situation or pulleys?

I doubt it, but most parts stores will test your old alternator for free before selling you a new one.
But, with a 12.5 I cannpt explain the brake light on. That may be a separate issue. Have you checked the master cylinder reservoir fluid level?

the brake light switch controls the shift lockout solenoid. perhaps this brake light switch is ajar or misaligned or inoperative. check to see if brake lights are working. there is an override to the shift lever lockout.

Hi Colin, I suggest a diagnostic scan. It seems to me that you have a internal failure with one or more sensor or other problems with the ABSystem. Regards John

I think the shift inter-lock solenoid was stuck at the time. it can also be your brake switch did not make contact. next time check your brake lights to see if they work while it hapen. so just wait!

What is the button on the right side of the shifter counsel for?

That could be a shift lock release button. Your car wont shift out of park unless you step on the brake, that button is an override in case you need to get the car out of park and the shift lock solenoid isnt working.

I have a hyundai elantra 2001.. the brake light and the battery light both turn on.. what could be the problem...

Your alternator is probably not charging at full capacity. The brake light is next in sequence with the battery light, and will glow dimly. (Set your parking brake, and it will glow brighter.) I replaced the alternator, and cleared up the problem.
