Question about 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier

1 Answer

97 cavalier z24. check engine light and ETS Light comes on after I exit the expressway. Mechanics say it's a throttle position sensor / Low voltage code P0122. Or could it be something else ? They are charging $229.38 to fix.(Dealer)Another said it is a circult fault. I went through inspection with flying colors, so I'm still perplex? Is this serious? Should I stay off the highways, until it's fix?

Yes you should. my brother had this same problem a few months ago. and his cavalier would randomly shut off on him when it wanted to. it can get dangerous if ignored. he ended up replacing the tps (throttle sensor) and the o2 sensor and it started running decently

code p 2138 refers to throttle position (TP) sensor/switch D/E-- voltage correlation=== causes --- wiring -- tp sensor /switch

code p 2122 refers to accelerator pedal (APP) sensor /switch D --low input===causes --wiring short to ground --APP sensor/ switch

also refers to engine control module (ECM) , idle control ---high input===causes ---wiring short to positive --TP sensor--ETS control valve (ETS----electronic throttle system)

When I push my gas pedal down about one inch the reduced power light comes on it don't stall just reduced power you shut the truck off restart it the light is off ,

The reduced power light is pertaining to the TAC - electronic throttle control . Is the check engine light lit ? If not still may have a DTC -diagnostic trouble code stored . You probably have a bad TPS - throttle position sensor .
Throttle Body Assembly
The throttle body for the throttle actuator control (TAC) system is similar to a conventional throttle body with several exceptions. One exception being the use of a motor to control the throttle position instead of a mechanical cable. Another exception is the throttle position (TP) sensor. The TP sensor is mounted in the throttle body assembly. The TP sensor is 2 individual TP sensors within the throttle body assembly. Two separate signal, low reference, and 5-volt reference circuits are used to connect the TP sensors and the powertrain control module (PCM). TP sensor 2 signal voltage increases as the throttle opens. TP sensor 1 signal voltage decreases as the throttle opens.

98 cavalier z24 check engine light and ETS light comes on. What is this?

The ETS light is the warning light for the Electronic Traction Control. Check Engine light indicates there is a problem with the emissions system. Take the vehicle to Auto Zone, Advance Auto Parts, O'Reilles, or Pep Boys and have the ECU scanned to see what codes comes up. The code will tell your what part is being effected.

As long as you can get it bolted to the engine somewhere it should work OK. I hope thats all the difference between those 2 engines. ?????

What does it mean when the ETS light and the check engine light are on?

Check engine light is for telling you that there is A problem with the fuel injection or emissions system, Most of the time there is no major problem to really wory about. ETS is the light for the Enhanced Traction system (traction control) This is not A vital component of your car.

If these two lights come on together then the extra traction sensor is broken and needs to be replaced when the sensor is fixed the check engine light will go off and the ets light will work properly again.

Ets off light keeps flashing

Likely time to change your brake pads which is the most common cause for the ETS light to start emitting on non all wheel drive vehicles.
