Question about 2005 Ford Five Hundred

Ford 500starts but will not stay running even when I step on the gas. On restart it does same thing. Runs for a few seconds.

    This past weekend Ithe owner of the Ford Five Hundres tried to start the car (nothing has been worked on) and the car started for a few seconds but she noticed the tachometer was bouncing upand down. The battery and engine light came on during this process. The car then died when she stepped on the gas. Need more help please.

Hello! I suspect the Accelerator Pedal Positioning Sensor is defective...It can be tested...Let me know if you have a multimeter and feel confident to perform voltage readings...Send a comment

    Hello! The electronic control systems on your vehicle are complex...The #1 suspect, as mentioned, is the APPS...#2 suspect is the Electronic Throttle Control Module (ETC)...#3 is the Mass Air Flow (MAF)...If the ETC module or MAF are defective the computer will sense their failure and set a trouble code...Since the Check Engine Light isn't on, it is unlikely that either sensor is causing the fault...Therefore the prime suspect is the Accelerator Pedal Positioning Sensor (APPS)...It is the pedal itself and cost around $80 to replace...It has an 8 pin connector with 7 pins in use...With the following wire colors...Gray/Yellow...Yellow/White...Gray/Red...White...Tan...Tan/Yellow...And White/Red...

    To be absolutely certain, before you spend any money, the sensor can be tested...Send a comment and I'll send the test procedure....Saailer

    Hello! Using safety pins, push a pin into the rear of the in-place connector on the APPS into the following locations...Gray/Yellow...White/Red...White...And Yellow/White...Making sure pins bottom out against the connector pins...Set the meter to read max of +5 volts...Connect the - probe of the meter to the Gray/Yellow pin...The positive meter probe connects (first reading) to the White/Red...Second to the White...And lastly to the Yellow/White...

    Turn the key to on...Record reading at White/Red...Then White...Then Yellow/White...
    Repeat the test, only this time (at each location) gradually press the pedal down...The voltage must increase to 4 volts in a smooth fashion...If meter reading jerks, or acts erratic as you slowly press down on the pedal the sensor is defective...If you need assistance don't hesitate to ask...Saailer

    Hello! The Check Engine Light means there is a trouble code stored...Run a scanner (OBDII) to determine the code...Battery light is indicating no alternator output...Remove alternator and have it tested...The APPS is still suspect...#1...We need to see what code is being pushed...#2...Charge battery and try and start the engine...#3...APPS can be tested with key in the on position (still primary suspect)...Send a comment...I am here!....Saailer

Probably bad gas, if you didn't put stay-bil or equivalent in the gas, when you parked it. Try taking the air filter out and spraying starting fluid (ether), into the air intake, while cranking the engine, if it starts, but only runs for a few seconds, the gas in the tank has probably gone bad, if it starts, and runs, you lucked out.

Using excessive fuel cleaner can damage injectors and the fuel pump - sounds like your problem is the fuel pump bearings, and you will probably have to have it replaced.

My 2002 Ford Ranger Edge 4x4 4.0L V6 has an overdrive problem. It shifts into all gears normally and runs like a top. The only problem is when I really step on the gas and kick it into overdrive, the truck...


when you step on the gas to the floor the trans is not trying to shift into overdrive, over drive connects as you are at a steady speed which lowers rpm and increase fuel mpg. when you step on the gas hard you are telling the trans to down shift to a passing gear,which calls for more fuel and air which is what you are not getting. A few things could cause this, bad crank sensor,ecm, fuel pump, fuel filter,knock sensor etc. I would get a full blown diagnostic done which will check fuel press,timing,sensors,codes,etc normally around $100.00 . But have this done at a very reputable shop and be there when they do it so they can explain everything to you, and make sure you understand things before somebody starts saying well it could be this and now i think its this or that.

okay i think i can help first no the thermostat haves nothing to do with it. check the fuel pressure regulator and about your noise under the car sounds like the catalytic converter cover is rattling it's known for this. hope i helped and good luck.

gheck gas tune,could be mixture,definately settings or pressure loss,making the system take a few seconds to start the car,get it looked at,not one for the novice,but is very fixable

if it continuously runs slow after stepping on the gas w/ poor milage it MAY be something clogged in your exhaust. However I'm having similar probs but a simple "turn engine off and restart" doesn't fix it as mine is misfiring...
