I have a 1998 Ford Ranger 2.5L Automatic. The problem is it will shift into reverse and drive, but will not change gears as you drive along. Also, the speedometer is not working. What causes this problem and what does it take to correct it?

If this is a clutch then you need to look into the shift actuator is what I believe it is called. It is a located on your clutch pedal. If this is an automatic it still could be something similar to that.

Loss of reverse gear in an automatic gearbox

Broken Reverse selector Band

Brake material on Selector band is Worn out

Selector band needs sever adjustment

Selector bands hydraulic piston seal had failed

Selector not getting oil to work the piston.

It can be issue with gears or problem with transmission and needs to be rebuilt. Also get the ****** fluid checked. If it's low, then such problems occurs.

The shifter needs to be inspected. If The shifter assembly is got misaligned, it has to be open and realign.

Is it a manual, if so, could be gear selector that is damaged. If it is automatic, and you can drive it and not reverse, could be 90% transmission. Now does the engine soar when going up in speed, or doesn't shift into next higher gear such as 2 or 3 or the 4th gear. If it is, then Yup, you got a transmission promblem and needs to be serviced. Will be looking into the thousands at cost.

In 9 out of 10 cases when I see this problem in the ranger, it is the planetary gear in the transmission. It is made of the cheapest metal available. It breaks usually from going to park before the truck stops or switching from reverse to drive while still rolling. Just a Idea , But I hope it isn't that . Reverse will work fine for a while, and have no forward gears.
