Question about Pontiac Firebird

1 Answer

Car running fine. next mornig, running very rough. Code test tool says "Open circuit Fuel Injector 4" 1. Is this a fuel injector replacement issue? Or could it be a simpler electrical circuit issue? 2. Is there any way to test the above question? 3. If it is an injector, is there any way to clean or otherwise fix the issue without a replacement injector 4. If it is likey an electrical issue, what would be the most likely culprit? Loose wire or other wiring related quick-fix type problems. Or would it be some other more complicated and more challenging to fix electrical circuit testing issue? 5. Last question: If it is a fuel injector replacement issue, do I need anything in addition to a reman. injector? Do I need to buy an O-ring kit also? Anything else I might need (special tool, a step-by-step guide becasue it is a tricky replacement perhaps?) Qualified help to answer these question would help me keep my wife (told me it was a dumb car to buy), keep my job (I need relaible transportation as a requirement for my job), and help me keep my friend (help him keep his wife around) who is loaning me a car (against the wishes of his btchy wife). dmcolburn@cox.net davidmcolburn@gmail.com (backup) or work email dave.colburn@us.army.mil

Hi,
Ok:
1. This is a problem with either the injector or wiring.
2. You need a multimeter to test the electrical wiring in the injector and then the loom.
3. If it is an open circuit in the injector the only way around it is to replace the injector, these are not able to be repaired.
4.If it is an electrical issue then you need to trace the wiring back to the main connector in the engine bay, and check the wiring for continuity, if thats ok then you need to check the wiring from the main connector to the ECM. If this is ok then the fault will be in the ECM which you will need to replace. Check ECM output voltage to the injector with the key on, if it measures more then 4.5 volts across the wiring then all the wiring is ok. You will need to replace the injector.
5. Yes it will pay to replace the o-ring but it is only 1 oring so it shouldn't be that expensive, also you don't need any special tools just a good set of open end spanners etc.

So check the voltage to the injector first.
Then check the injector windings, then the wiring.......
Hope this helps, let me know if you need more information.

Thanks

Jason

If plug an plug wire has been replaced , an dist. cap an rotor an problem is still there ,maybe a fuel injector problem .
Perform the fuel injector coil test. Refer to Fuel Injector Solenoid Coil Test .
A fuel injector coil winding resistance that is too high or too low will affect engine drivability. A fuel injector control circuit DTC may not set, but a misfire may be apparent. The fuel injector coil windings are affected by temperature. The resistance of the fuel injector coil windings will increase as the temperature of the fuel injector increases.
Diagnostic Aids
?€¢
Monitoring the misfire current counters, or misfire graph, may help to isolate the fuel injector that is causing the condition.

?€¢
Operating the vehicle over a wide temperature range may help isolate the fuel injector that is causing the condition.

?€¢
Perform the fuel injector coil test within the conditions of the customer's concern. A fuel injector condition may only be apparent at a certain temperature, or under certain conditions.

How to fix a code P0304

The P0304 code means that the cylinder 4 is misfiring or is randomly misfiring. Start by checking for intake leaks an if no leaks are found the next step is to replace the spark plugs on cylinder 4. If the problem persist more tests needs to be done to diagnose problem, see "Possible Causes"

- Faulty spark plug 4
- Clogged or faulty fuel injector 4
- Faulty ignition coil 4
- Fuel injector 4 harness is open or shorted
- Fuel injector 4 circuit poor electrical connection
- Ignition coil 4 harness is open or shorted
- Ignition coil 4 circuit poor electrical connection
- Insufficient cylinder 4 compression
- Incorrect fuel pressure
- Intake air leak
most likely change your spark plugs these should be done every 60,000 km

Fix obd-II code p0304/p0300

You need to run a compression check on the engine, no cylinder should show a pressure reading of more than 5% lower than the highest reading observed on any cylinder. Also have you verified number four cylinder is actually getting fuel injector activation, hook up a 12 volt probing test light (see picture below) and probe the connector to #4 cylinder, the light should blink rapidly when the engine is running, this indicates the injector is operating and delivering fuel. I also suggest you have the dealer run an electronic cylinder balance test, it takes a special tool but well worth the money.

91 LEGACY STARTED RUNNING ROUGH

The cylinders are numbered as on the spark pack you changed. You might have done better putting the seafoam in the tank as an injector cleaner. Not sure why you changed so many parts, you seem to know how to get the codes from test connector lead hookup and the blink pattern. You might also want to check the fuel rail pressure and the crank and cam angle sensors. Before replacing the injector, swap the #4 injector with the adjacent one and see it the code moves with the injector or stays put. If the code stays on #4, then check the injector wiring, if it moves clean or replace the injector.
