Had the same issue myself - you have a CSFI injection spider assembly. Replace it with a MFI upgrade and you will be all set.

There are several things that tribute to how the injectors fire, but the ECU is what actually fires them, the pick-up inside of the distributor is what tells the ECU when to fire them.

No, the fuel regulator from a 96 will not fit a 98. The 98 is a vortec and i believe the 96 is TBI. You are on the right track though, but the fuel regulator is attached to the fuel injector spider and is one unit inside the upper intake. It is relative easy to replace just takes some time.

It could be a faulty fuel injector, try running a fuel injector cleaner through your fuel system. At worst the poppet nozzle has gone bad and will need to be replaced, you can buy the poppet nozzle it self individually at Auto Zone or buy upgrade MFI system which is much better and less pron to fuel leaking room a cracked poppet line or nozzle which will cause what you have described.

1996 gmc k1500 4x4 5.7 vortec motor no start keep

Replace the coolant sensor on the front of the intake manifold. The coolant sensors on this engine does go bad and wont set a check engine light. The sensor will read about -32 to 0 degrees when they do go bad. The computer thinks it is that cold and sends tons of fuel to the engine. If you try to start the engine with the throttle depressed to the floor it puts the fuel system in clear flood mode and wont fire the injectors. Engine will start then and run very rich. The coolant sensor has two wires on it and sometimes you need to replace the wiring pigtail going to it as the sensor can seep coolant into the connector and corrode the terminals. All the parts are available at pepboys and autozone or napa. Good luck

OK first pushing the "gas" all the way down does nothing except when theTPS throttle psoition sensor is all the way open it shuts off the fuel injectors and this is called CLEAR FLOOD. When the truck does start is there a lot of thick black smoke?
The most common proble with the Vortec engineis the "spider" assembly under the plastic intake plenem. the fuel is delivered to the injector assembly the injectors are actually "poppets" on the end of plastic tubing that are fed through a fuel distributor assembly the fuel tubes often fail and get brittle and leak causing a righ condition which is why you need to hold the gas down to the floor. you are going to need to change the "spider " assembly and the fuel pressure regulator at the same time. this is your problem its so so common to the vortec engine. Now GM is the only place you should be trying to get these parts aftermarket will not work as well an could cause a fire. Gm will come with all the necessary parts to install it ONCE, and go ahead and buy intake plenem gaskets at the Gm Supply to while you are there Last I knew the "spider" and fuel presssure regulator were about $550.00 here in Seattle plus Labor to install
Hope this helps if you like this information please give me a fixya Rating I have personally changed about 100 spiders in the 14 years I owned my diagnostic repair facility here in Seattle
