The aircon system is fully gased yet the compresser wont engage, are there pressure switches in the system

Yes , two , a low pressure an a high pressure cut off switch . If either of these were bad there would be a DTC - diagnostic trouble code stored in the PCM - engine computer . Does your Captive have manual or automatic heating an A/C ?
Pressure transducer switching incorporates the functions of the high-pressure and the low-pressure cutout switches along with the fan cycling switch. The pressure transducer is located in the high-side liquid refrigerant line behind the right strut tower, between the right strut tower and the front of dash. The output from this pressure transducer goes to the electronic control module (ECM), which controls the compressor function based on the pressure signal.

How jetta compressor clutch work

Ac compressor clutches get power from a relay via pressure switches.
If the system is low on freon, the low pressure switch prevents the ac clutch from engaging.
The clutch is a magnet.

My 2002 neon's A/C blows warm air. The vent pressure is working well- but it blows warmer than the outside air. Can I fix this myself? What might the problem be?

If you are handy, yes you can. Most likely causes are loss of freon which would prevent the compressor clutch from being engaged and operating the compressor, a lack of 12 volts being applied to the compressor clutch because the a/c compressor fuse or relay has failed, preventing the clutch from engaging the compressor, or the compressor clutch itself failing. Easy test is to watch the compressor pulley with the motor running. The pulley will, of course be spinning, but the circular assembly mounted to the front of the pulley will spin with the pulley only when the compressor is engaged. There is a sensor mounted to the a/c line that prevents the clutch from engaging the compressor if there in not enough freon in the system. You could go to auto zone or checker and buy a can of freon r-134 with a hose for around $15.00. It is fairly easy to follow the instructions to charge the system. If, after allowing some of the can to pressurize the system, the compressor clutch engages then you can continue to charge the system. Cold air should start to blow by the time the can is empty. Or you can locate the a/c relay located in the fuse panel, remove its plastic cover and manually close the contacts while observing the compressor pulley assembly. If the clutch doesn't engage then the problem in probably electrical, a fuse, the relay or the electric clutch itself. Go to auto zone and check you their dvd on a/c repair for under $9.00. Hope this helps! Dano

Unit working but not blowing cool air and not cooling truck down

Check first if clutch engaging. Sometimes the clutch engages but when the tempt in the engine compartment rises the clutch disengage. This is due to a problem with the magnetic clutch assembly located behind the clutch. Has two wires that will produce the magnetic field to help engage the clutch. It requires special tool to r/r and some vehicles can be done with the compressor installed.

Air conditioner doesn't work blows out hot air

Does the compressor magnetic clutch operate the compressor? If so, then the coolant has probably leaked out of the system. If clutch doesn't operate the compressor, possible fuse blown, bad relay, or open winding in compressor clutch.

Electricity is not reaching the a/c compressor.

If it engages when you bypass, it is not the magnetic clutch.
It could be a relay or the low pressure cycling switch. I would jumper the cycling pressure switch connector. If it runs, I would check to be sure you have enough pressure first with compressor running. If ok, change the cycling switch
