My van started overheating after a below freezing night. When I started it, the belt was squealing. After a short time the temp was up and the high temp light came on. After I shut it off, the coolant...

Your anti freeze was weak and froze.the belts squealing was due from the pump was froze (ice). Put your car in your garage and use a heat gun around the engine block to warm the metal so internal temperature will rise and melt the ice.once defrosted star the car and check coolant level.use hydromiter to check your anti freeze. Should be 30 to 40 below zero.

SMOKE IS COMING FROM MY CROWN VIC VENTS THEN I SMELL A SWEET SMELL

the smoke is probably coolant steam and the sweet smell is the unique aroma of engine coolant (anti-freeze). check the carpets, they may be wet with coolant. most likely a heater core failure.

I have a 2001 aztek and it started over heating !! we went and bought a sensor but need to know where its located at??? can u help

Hello Kay, What you need is to have a auto technician to check your auto for the reason it over heating. There are a number of reason why auto/truck over heat and most are not pleasant.
Such as, radiator fan not work, thermostat not opening or stuck closed, coolant level is really low,

temperature sensor is bad...maybe, leaky head gasket, plug radiator, OK, now, when you auto is overheating does it smell like burning anti-freeze, kinda sweet burnt smell.... If are smell this, then your auto is really over heating. Also, to you have a green looking fluid on your driveway where you park you car? If there is, then your auto is leaking anti-freeze.

Now, to find the sensor. Look on the engine, if you have 4 cylinder, or V6 look around the intake manifold the should be something that looks like the sensor you bought with rubber/plastic cap and one wire, and it will be only one wire. I wish you lots of luck in your endeavors in finding this temperature sensor, and hope it just this sensor that is malfunctioning. GB...stewbison

I have a 1995 chevy astro van that throws out gray smoke from the exhaust which later turns to black smoke the smoke also smells like gas

May be a head gasket. Anti-freeze will burn white / gray. Make sure you are not losing coolant. Look at your oil on the dip for any signs of foaming / water.
Take care.

I have a 2001 Legacy twin turb Gtb Wagon, When im driving i can smell an oily smell coming through the Air conditioning. the Smell is actually quite similar to burning coolent. whats the guts with that?

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly. You have a leaking heater coil. Check your radiator coolant levels and I am certain that over several days you will note your car is suddenly using water. That sweet oily smell is anti-freeze. Many people bypass the heater coil lines in the engine compartment until they can get the heater core replaced.

Bypassing the heater core is done by disconnecting the lines forward of the firewall in using a pipe nipple or piece of copper tubing with clamps. I recommend you either bypass the lines or have the heater core replaced ASAP. You run the risk of overheating your engine from coolant loss.
Thanks for choosing FixYa.

The plastic box that you put anti-freeze in; having to replace it with a full thing of anti freeze- weekly. No leak is visible. What is it?

No sign of leak means that your vehicle is likely burning it. An internal coolant leak will cause this. Bad gas mileage, white, sweet smelling exhaust will confirm.

This will likely destroy your motor and exhaust soon.

Overheating

If you are adding anti-freeze every time this happens, you are still loosing coolant some were. I assume there are no puddles on the garage floor or where you park the van? Check the oil dipstick and make sure the oil is not a "milky"color. Check the passenger side carpet for wetness, you may have to pull it back.
If all of that is OK, you are still burning the coolant by way of the intake gasket or head gasket.
Good luck, let me know.
