First, my request was concerning a 2001 - not 2002. But I will assume that installation is the same for both.

Next you only need to send one Email - not like 4 -

My main concern was, what preparation for replacing the pump do I need to do. THat is what other pieces do I need to loosen and/or totally remove - stuff like muffler, tailpipe, axles, etc - ?

What bolts and straps holding tank to vehicle do I loosen or remove??

  • Jack Penland Sep 17, 2010

Am still trying to ascertain what has to be removed, lowered, or taken away prior to trying to lower gas tank. What must be disconnected first before dropping what?

  • Jack Penland Sep 18, 2010

Sorry, took so long. But problem solved. Well worth the six bucks

Removal & Installation

The in-tank fuel pump module contains the fuel pump and pressure regulator which adjusts fuel system pressure. Fuel pump voltage is supplied through the fuel pump relay.

The fuel pump is serviced as part of the fuel pump module. The fuel pump module is installed in the top of the fuel tank and contains the electric fuel pump, fuel pump reservoir, inlet strainer fuel gauge sending unit, fuel supply and return line connections and the pressure regulator. The inlet strainer, fuel pressure regulator and level sensor are the only serviceable items. If the fuel pump requires service, replace the fuel pump module.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions section.
  2. Properly relieve the fuel system pressure.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable Fuel tank
  4. Clean the top of the tank to remove any loose dirt.

    1. Fuel pump module electrical connector from the top of the fuel pump module

    2. Using special tool 6856, remove the fuel pump locknut by turning it counterclockwise.

      CAUTION
The fuel reservoir of the fuel pump module does not empty out when the tank is drained. The fuel in the reservoir may spill out when the module is removed.

    3. Remove the fuel pump and O-ring from the tank and discard the O-ring.

  • Rene J Solis Sep 16, 2010

    To install:

    1. Thoroughly clean all parts. Wipe the seal area of the tank clean. Place a new O-ring on the ledge between the tank threads and the pump module opening.

    2. Position the fuel pump module in the tank. Be sure the alignment tab on the underside of the pump module flange sits in the corresponding notch in the fuel tank.

    3. While holding the fuel pump module in place install the locking ring and torque to 40 inch lbs. (5 Nm) using special tool 6856 or a spanner-type tool.

    4. Install or connect the following:

      Fuel tank

      Fuel pump module electrical connector

      Negative battery cable

    5. Fill the fuel tank with fuel. Install the fuel filler cap. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position to pressurize the system. Check the fuel system for leaks.

This site only allows us to post images and text smaller than 150k, that's why I had to send many posting. Let me know if you need additional assistance. Don't forget to rate this post!!

  • Rene J Solis Sep 17, 2010

As I explained on the last comment, this site only allows us to send 150k of information at the time, and since the text was copied and pasted, it took 4 mails to send it all.

Besides disconnecting the battery and the two bolts to release the straps there are no more parts or accessories to be removed but the fuel pump.

  • Rene J Solis Sep 17, 2010

In order to remove the fuel tank, the filler tube clamp has to be loosened and filler tube removed.

Maybe his graphics will help you identify what has to be disconnected and removed.images.

SOURCE: 2001 Chrysler 300M Engine Light on all the time

Hello, my engine light was on for a VERY LONG time and everytime I got it checked no one could tell me what the problem was because things always checked out fine. The "code" says its a loose gas cap or something, but it wasnt that. My 300M also was having A HARD TIME STARTING UP for about 8 months and leaking coolant for about a month. I finally found a mechanic who knew what he was doing; 1. Leaking Radiator 2. Coolant found in #2 or #3 cylinder. The cause of this was a busted HEAD GASKET. If your 300M has trouble starting and the Engine light stays on have a mechanic check your engine for a busted head gasket and see if all your cylinders are firing correctly. I had to pay $2600 for a new Head Gasket, Radiator and all new hoses plus labor. CRYING!!!!!!!!!!

I have a 2001 300M 130K - very well kept. Stuff happens...

SOURCE: i need to know where to find the fuel filter

Check under your rear seat. If you dont find it there it is Mounted in the the gastank. I would suggest you dont drop the tank and take it to a shop for them to do it. THere are special tools used to remove the gasoline in the tank and also remove the pup itself. If it is in the seat then disconnect the battery and its just a fuel bolts that you can remove. If you remove it make sure to cover the hole where your pump was . You dont want to ignite those Fumes in the sun.

SOURCE: how to install fuel pump

You are in luck.On your car there is an access panel in the forward part of the trunk that will let you get to the fuel pump without dropping the gas tank!

Pull back the carpet in the area between the rear wheels, thats the access panel! If i were you i would goto a autozone and buy the repair manual for your vehicle then it will outline the procedure. In my manual it indicates you should change the fuel filter a well just to be safe. If you need Further assistance please feel free to let me know. Thanks, Midwest-tek

most likely the fuel pump has failed. To check it... have someone lean under the car as close as possible to the fuel tank, then turn on the ignition key while the person listens for a whineing noise. if they hear nothing. the pump has failed.

2001 300m wont start changed fuel pump turns over but will not start any ideas

is there a spark at the leads? check leads, coil, crank or cam position sensors, e.c.m in that order. if there is a spark and the new pump's fitted correctly, check for fuel blockages along fuel line, if injectors are opening, air flow sensor.
or alternatively have a reliable technician put it on a diagnising machine. i'm sure you'll agree that it would save alot of time and effort

Gas pump keeps shutting off when fueling

you have a vapor vent issue. The fuel filler pipe has a vent inside of it to let out air as you pump gas in. If no air comes out, it will kick of the nozzle
The other possbility is that it is a poor design and others are having issues too. Cal your dealer service manager, not a service writer and ask him if there is an issue. Write or email Chrysler and ask them too. If the fuel filler pipe has a sharp bend and goes up hill at all, that will back up the fuel fill. Try putting the nozzle in upside down & see what happens. Also, try inserting the nozzle just a couple of inches. Report back please.
