Question about 1991 Toyota Pickup

1 Answer

Hi I'm having an issue with my 1991 Toyota pick up truck 3.0 v6. I had the heads re-done and after the vehicle started it was making the loadest noise from the distributor hausing. It sounded as if I had no oil pressure, but when we checked we had plenty of oil pressure. Also the noise seems to get louder then all of a sudden the noise is gone. I pulled out the distributor but found no gears broken and or missing. Also at idle the check engine light is off, as soon as I drive a high RPM it turns on and the engine looses power. I set the timing at 10 degrees before top ded center. Can someone out there help out. Tony, Thanks!

You MIGHT have a vacuum leak which is affecting the timing.

The thermostat housing is located by grabbing the upper radiator hose, and following it back to the engine block.
The housing that the hose is connected to is the thermostat housing.
Changing the thermostat will fix your problem!

Thanks for using FixYa - a FixYa rating is appreciated!!

I have a 1988 3.0. V6 4*4 toyota pickup the altanator is bad can I use an altanator off of a 1991 toyota ? Is it the sane?

If it will bolt up the same, has the same electrical plug on it and the same pulley then there shouldn't be an issue. All regular vehicle alternators basically have the same purpose and output. Good luck!

Are the valves adjustable on the 1990 3.0L? I

1) The valves are adjustable, but they are of the shim-type adjustment. You will need to obtain the proper shims from a dealership parts department.

2) Any Toyota dealer can, by you giving them your VIN, tell you whatever was done to the vehicle under warranty

3) There are no special service campaigns for bed replacements, nor has there ever been one. Any bed that 'was' replaced was under factory "goodwill", to maintain customer satisfaction.

I want to replace my head gaskets, 91 v6 3.0 4x4 toyota. how bad of a job would it be? i know a little about cars but never done a head gasket.

It's a big job if you've never done one before. If you have and are familiar with this type of thing it should take about 8 - 10 hours. I strongly suggest that when you do you take the heads to a machine shop to check them over and HAVE THE VALVES ADJUSTED! They use pain in the neck shim system that has to be adjusted after 60? k otherwise you'll burn a valve.

My 1991 v6 4 runner auto has a flashing overdrive light on the dash. Most of the time it skips 2nd witch makes it sluggish. I plugged in a diagnostics link and get a fault message comming up on the...

That code 63= "Severed No. 2 solenoid or short circuit-severed wire harness or short circuit." There is a way to check the No. 2 transmission solenoid with an ohmeter. You'll have to disconnect the wire bundle from the ECT computer and measure the resistance between the S2 terminal and ground. You should see 11-15 ohms. If the solenoid is open or reads very high ohms, it should be replaced. This can be done by removing the transmission pan and the transmission oil filter to gain access to the solenoids. You do not need to remove the whole transmission from the vehicle.

1991 toyota 4runner v6 auto rough start

Possibly a leaking head gasket. Water/antifreeze seeps into the cyllinder when it cools off, and then it won't fire properly until the coolant is blown out the exhaust when you start it. Let it warm up with the rad cap off. If you see bubbles continuously coming up to the filler hole, you have a head gasket problem. Do you have to add coolant monthly, or weekly?
If you're lucky, it could be just a spark plug that doesn't want to do anything until it warms up, or it could be a valve.

Something is drawing too much power and you will have to find out which it is. When the head job was done they may have gotten a wire pinched in the block or some thing. You would have to be quite mknowledgable in vehicle electronics to find it. I would suggest that you take it back to the shop or guy that done the head job for you to correct.
